Description
"The horizon leans forward, offering you space to place new steps of change." -Maya Angelou Enjoy this mid-mod cabin with amazing ocean views in the bucolic American Riviera. Let the private 20 acre forest catalyze renewal, and bolster creativity. Create new memories and forge deeper bonds with friends & family on the spacious deck, in the hot tub, or on a stimulating hike through the horse trails leading to the beach or into quaint Summerland. Breathe deep, shake it off, feed your process! The space Up the stairs off the driveway, the main entrance opens to the expansive living room with high raked, beamed ceilings, built-in cabinets, shelves and window benches of classic mid-mod architecture. The kitchen is open, with a service bar and all the modern necessities, and sports a red porcelain sink. You'll find overstuffed down furniture, a blue tooth speaker, a Samsung Smart TV with a Roku media player, and a wood -burning stove in the living room. There is also an adjoining bathroom, with a spacious walk-in shower with a built-in bench. The jewel in the crown, however, is the full deck which offers the best views of the ocean and surrounding hills and forest. You can enjoy meals on the large dining table, and there is a propane patio heater, patio furniture where you can enjoy both sun and shade. Blankets/wraps are nearby if a cooling fog rolls in. Please feel free to user the app-friendly Celestron telescope and board games you'll find in the house. Up the stairs, the master bedroom occupies the third-floor alcove with a queen bed, full ensuite bathroom and built-in wardrobe, and ocean views through a large picture window. The large second bedroom is on the lower level, below the main floor, accented by a matching stone tile floor and wall. There are two queen-sized beds, plenty of built-in closet space, another built-in window bench, built-in shelving with board games, and a large round, spinning lounge chair. The thermostat that controls the heat for the whole house is in this bedroom. Outside the bedroom, the foyer doubles as an extra guest bedroom with the trundle daybed (two twin beds) that can be used for extra guests. Off the foyer, there is a half bath/laundry room, and a fenced-in deck with a hot tub that has it's own beautiful view of the ocean, a BBQ grill, and patio furniture. The deck opens to the driveway, and provides a private entrance to this floor. The immediate outdoor space is complimented with a hammock, a trampoline, a swurfer (a hybrid swing you are "supposed" to stand on for a surfing experience), large and stunning gnarled oak trees, seasonal streams and gardens, as well as the rest of the forest and it's inhabitants. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE While the cabin feels completely private and secluded, the surrounding forest comes alive after dark with the sound of wildlife. Being back up against the foothills, and particularly at the back of 20 wooded acres, favors an exorbitant amount of wildlife on the property. There is always deer, and it is common to see them especially driving back onto the property after dark. There are also plenty of birds of prey, some regulars, like a white barn owl whose piercing shriek is unmistakable. If you hear it, keep your eyes on the night sky because you will often see it's ghostly white figure glide past the deck shortly thereafter. There is a fox that lives near the driveway, as well as a lynx. Note that there has also been recent cougar and bear and sightings. DOG OWNERS: There are no roads or traffic in the immediate area to worry about, but there is wildlife - and some are dangerous. Feel free to walk your dog off leash, but please keep them within eyesight. Even if your dog is on a flea & tick regimen, you should check for ticks regardless. Definitely take advantage of the lax leash laws on all the Summerland beaches, but please be attentive to the novice horseback riders on the beach. HORSEBACK RIDING - The Summerland Beach Horseback Rides leave from the property entrance. They offer morning or sunset horseback rides onto the beach, or trail rides, at approximately $150/person. If interested, I'm happy to field inquiries. POLO SEASON - Lambert Rd., flanked on both sides by horse ranches and polo fields is at the epicenter of Santa Barbara Polo. Polo season starts in April and lasts through the summer into the fall. So bring those big floppy hats, and check it out. Guest access Guest have full access to the house and surrounding property (excluding my apartment, the barn and the Avion trailer). Other things to note The cabin was built in 1973 when the property was an expansive avocado and lemon orchard. Sadly, root rot claimed the avocado trees decades ago, and Nature has slowly reclaimed the property to the point that it is now a fairly densely forested 20 acre area. This makes it feel extremely remote - like something between a mountain cabin and a hunting lodge. I believe the dense forest and the unique position of the house is the reason that there is an unusual amount of wildlife on the property - even compared to my neighbors. The driveway is essentially a quarter mile dirt road that gently slopes up to the cabin. It is typically in decent shape, but expect a couple spots carved up by this year's storms. It should be fine if you are observing the 5 mile/hour speed limit on the property. Please go slow. Horses use the same driveway as you enter the property, and it prevents kicking up too much dust. Thus far, none of the house guests have had any problems with the road, but I would still recommend a SUV or AWD vehicle especially if there is rain in the forecast, and for your own general comfort level. FAQ - Can you walk to the beach? The beach is about a mile / mile and half from the house. It isn't "hilly" but slightly downhill on the way to the beach and therefore, slightly uphill on the way back. Personally, I would say the beach is hikeable but not particularly walkable...if that makes sense? ** If I wanted to spend the day at the beach, would I walk to the beach with my dog, my chair, cooler, umbrella, and the rest of my shit? Hell No. I've never seen the beach parking lot full. ** If I wanted to go out and walk a couple miles with my dog for a little exercise, maybe jump in the surf to cool off before contiuing on - YES, I would and have hiked to the beach and back. In fact, a great hike that I would recommend to newcomers (particularly if they are not familiar with the area) would be to hike through the horse trails, catch polo practice as you hug the polo field down to the overpass, and down to the beach. From there, walk west (feels like north) along the Summerland beaches exiting at Lookout Park and up into the quaint town of Summerland. Get a sense of Summerland - window shop the infamous H&G shops, check out Godmother's (new-ish bookstore), a respectful nod to Hector the Ghost at the haunted Big Yellow House, get coffee or a bite as you walk back east (feels like south). Maybe grab that coffee at Field & Fort or check out A Sacred Space store and their amazing Zen garden, before turning left on Greenwell Ave. to connect back with the horse trails at Summerland Greenwell Nature Preserve. I don't know the exact distance of this hike but it feels like 3-4 miles and isn't that strenuous, and you can stop and rest in several great spots. This will give you a great sense of the area you're staying in, and if there is anything in Summerland you want to revisit. My fav is the antique collective on the other side of the Big Yellow House.
