Their deli is also well equipped to gather specialty goodies for a creekside picnic EM'S CAFE - right opposite Brinx is another great option ZEST BAKERY - further along south from Brinx is our favourite bakery. Their Portuguese Tarts are amazing and we vote them number 1 for the pies, sausage rolls and pastie category. They have delicious lunch options and you can dine in as well FOXYS BAKERY - across the road from Zest is a large bakery with a wide selection and extensive operating hours which makes it a reliable stop THE LITTLE LARDER - right on Railway Street and 8 minutes walk from door to door leaving Magnolia House, serves reliable Merlot coffee and a large array of delicious breakfast and lunch options. PUBS A drive or walk through the Main Street will reveal the plethora of pubs available in this small country town. All have their own unique character and provide the usual pub offerings with public bars, dining areas and bottle shops SUPERMARKETS Woolworths, Aldi and SPANOS IGA all sit within a couple of blocks of each other. For ease of parking and a great range of deli and standard supermarket produce we favour the IGA SEAFOOD Probably not what you would first think about when being in a South West Queensland town but we have the privilege of the Aussie Fresh Seafood truck coming fresh from the trawlers to set up every Friday morning from 8am to 2pm right behind the Central Hotel. Here you can grab an array of fresh seafood for another delicious and easy prep meal MARKETS Again on a Friday morning just inside the grounds of the old Stanthorpe Train Station is the farm produce markets. Open from 7am until 1pm vendors from the surrounding farms bring their delicious farm fresh produce. Just a few stalls will provide what you need, a selection of fruit and veg, pasture raised eggs, preserves and honey, maybe some home baked goods and then an array of pasture raised meats Check the internet and local flyers for notice of other markets usually held in the Showgrounds hall on the main road into town WINERIES You will find the highly regarded Granite Belt wineries to visit in all directions starting from the Northern side with The Summit and Heritage wineries then working your way through Borreann, Robert Channon, Ridgemill Estate, (to name just a few) finishing at the southerly end around Ballandean and Girraween with Golden Grove, Ballandean Estate, Girraween and Balancing Heart wineries. There are many more to be discovered in between and around these wineries and picking up a map at your first winery will help personalise your hit list. A "Strange Birds" map will mark the wineries who offer the varieties falling under this category, being wines that represent less than 1% of the national output of that variety. This makes for some interesting tasting and the opportunity to develop a new palette for these lesser known wines. Enjoy! APPLES AND OTHER FRUITS The northern side is home of the majority of fruit farms. Stop at the roadside options to gather fresh fruit for your stay. Sutton's Juice Factory north of Stanthorpe will deliver their famous Apple Pie and juice and cider. A quick internet search will have your mouth watering when you read about this humble baker with a big reputation. GIRRAWEEN NATIONAL PARK An easy scenic drive south into Girraween National Park and you can set out on some of the Nations most envied hikes. This beautiful national park offers a quintessential Australian bush experience where you are sure to see Kangaroos and other precious wildlife both as you drive in and along the hiking paths. Known for its beautiful flowers and rock formations the several hiking options offer photographic moments galore. A quick internet search will give you a more detailed overview of all your options so you can plan your day trip carefully. On the road into Girraween you will see the Chocolate Shop. Great stop either before or after your hike for a coffee/hot chocolate and to gather some onsite chocolate creations. DINING OUT Again an internet search is the best option for up to date operating hours and recommendations. We've had good dining experiences at: The Barrel Room at Ballandean estate - their menu changes seasonally and offers some delicious food and wine options Varias - located at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism Essen - offers a set menu which it changes weekly. Provided their set options on offer that week suit your taste buds and dietary requirements they are highly regarded Balancing Heart Vineyard for great pizzas overlooking their lake. They also offer live music on alternating weeks and you can do your wine tasting while enjoying your meal. Stunning scenery and ambience at the foot of Girraween National Park Stanthorpe RSL for a simple bistro meal. Become a member for life for a few dollars and enjoy discounts on meals and drinks
