Situated in the grounds of an impressive country house, Butler's Rest is a stylishly renovated, quirky 19th Century cottage. Perfect for a romantic escape. In an unspoiled part of the New Forest, deer roam through the gardens, a short walk from three wonderful pubs and the open forest itself. It's a great setting from which to explore, although with a well equipped kitchen and cosy woodburner, you may not venture anywhere! The space NB: We regret the property is not suitable for mobile infants and young children due to certain historic features of the cottage which are not child safe, in particular the open stairs to the mezzanine bedroom. **Our prices are inclusive of Airbnb service fees and cleaning - no hidden extras! Bike hire, fuel for the logburner, charcoal for the BBQ also all included in the price** This historic cottage has been welcoming guests for over 20 years, and is stuffed full of character and original features; it was originally the servants’ accommodation to the main house. THE LOCATION • An easy walk to three outstanding country pubs and a lovely cafe. • Surrounded by farmland with grazing cattle and horses; the forest ponies, donkeys, cattle and pigs roam freely the other side of our cattle grid. • Walk directly onto a public footpath from the gate by the main house. Bikes available to borrow (no extra charge). Helmets also available. We have six bikes shared between a maximum of six guests on site. No need to prebook bikes - just help yourself throughout your stay. THE COTTAGE • Period features including vaulted ceilings, bread oven, stained glass window and original cobbled kitchen floor. • Fully equipped kitchen, with toaster, kettle, electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge freezer and dishwasher. • Roll top bath on mezzanine level overlooking the kitchen, a true touch of luxury! • Wood burning stove, plus logs, kindling, firelighters and matches all included • 43 inch smart TV with Freesat, Airplay and Netflix. • Fast and reliable free WiFi. We have fibre to the premises and a wired connection to the cottage - it achieves 500 Mpbs+ • Roberts DAB radio and a selection of board games and books. • Original wooden staircase leading to mezzanine bedroom with its truly comfortable double bed made with fresh white sheets. The mattress is medium-firm (Eve Premium Hybrid, new 2022), but a soft mattress topper available on request - your comfort is our priority! • A WC and shower are located on the ground floor. • Welcome basket: on arrival you will find tea, coffee, biscuits and a few little gifts to help you settle in, including eggs from our rescue chickens (eggs subject to availability - sadly as of Nov 2025 we are not permitted to supply eggs to guests due to the current Avian Influenza restrictions). We are happy to provide a vegan or gluten free welcome basket on request. • Adult only, pet free accommodation. French doors lead out to a seating area within the walled garden, which enjoys a gorgeous view down the arched pergola. There is also a shared cobbled patio area with seating and BBQ, as well as the large lawned front gardens (around 1 acre) with further seating and views over neighbouring farmland. Local wildlife includes a large herd of deer that roam the walled gardens and neighbouring farmland, so take care when driving down the tree lined drive way. All the wonderful original features do mean the surfaces are uneven, the walls are wonky and the stairs narrow, we have embraced the imperfect, and think it is perfectly imperfect and hope you will love and appreciate these truly original details as we do. Guest access The seating area in the walled garden to the rear of Butler's Rest is reserved for your use. The remainder of the outdoor space is shared with our other guests, a max of 6 guests at any one time. Your vehicle will be parked directly outside the cottage, within a gravelled courtyard.
