The Wrack & Croy, Eco-living by the Warksburn
The Wrack & Croy, Eco-living by the Warksburn
Description
Quiet and secluded, environmentally conscious off-grid retreat for those who enjoy a more raw stay: birdwatching and walks, dark skies, owl hoots and wood fires. A five minute walk leads you to a hand-crafted shepherd’s hut - The Croy - and the wash house - The Wrack - on a south-facing bank of the Warksburn. Overlooking oak woodland and set within a two hectare meadow you have the sole use and run of the whole field and down to the burn. For those who like more of a raw stay. The space The Croy is a one-roomed shepherd’s hut, hand-made with oak and old reclaimed timbers. A Jøtul stove gives warmth and a cooking plate. A raised king-size bed has a ‘lamb's crate’ underneath that can be pulled out and used as storage or toddler bed. Tap your water from our local well, fed to a stand pipe by The Croy. A gas stove on a butcher's block table can be used for cooking. Crockery is in clay. Lighting is given by two LED lamps inside and a brass kerosene lamp for out. The Wrack is an old tup shed which has been turned into an outdoor heated shower, a compost toilet and wood store. It also has another small kitchen with gas stove for outdoor cooking. As there is no electricity, mobile phones can be charged at the Boiler Room in the yard by the Byre if the host is home. Do ask. A wi-fi signal can be had here too. For those staying a week or more use can be made of a washing machine at the Byre. We welcome you to be part of the shift of use of the land from a traditional small holding to a more wildlife-orientated and diverse use. We began by planting 1600 native tree species. Our aim now is to have nesting redshanks and curlews in the scrapes within a few years, and beavers along the Warksburn. Keep warm and light your own fires with branches of old oak and ash trees in the Jøtul stove indoors or the open fire nearby in the field. Guest access You will have the run of the shepherd’s hut, which stands alone with the wash house in a five acre field. As there are no other huts and no shared wash house you are free to be alone and walk the land and bathe in the Warksburn and to take in the quiet of woodland, the burn, between wildlife and grazing sheep. From the parking spot by the farmstead a five minute walk leads you to the hut. You are free to walk within the 25 acres of fields, woods of the working farmstead. Other things to note You are free to pitch a tent or two within the fenced off haugh by the shepherd’s hut. We kindly ask you to bear in mind that The Wrack & Croy are part of a working small holding so a farm worker/shepherd may be on the land nearby tending the sheep, cutting grass or what not. As the hut is off-grid there is no fridge. The bucket filled with water can be used instead or it can be put in the nearby Warksburn! Toddlers and babies are welcome but as there is no stove guard and there are no fences along the Warksburn an eye should be kept on them at all times. The pull-out ‘lamb's crate’ underneath the bed can be used as a toddler bed. For those who are prone to the cold, beware that you should be able to light your own fire in the Jøtul stove to stay warm. In the Wrack there is a warm water for an outdoor shower and a sink for washing up. A half-hour walk brings you to Wark, a cafe, pub and buses to Hexham.
