Roman Cottage - Hadrian's Wall dark sky outpost.
Roman Cottage - Hadrian's Wall dark sky outpost.
Description
The big sky country of the Northumberland National Park is the backdrop to this remote, cosy detached cottage. Situated on the ancient historical monument of Bremenium Roman Fort, an outpost of Hadrians Wall, it's a true rural retreat. The area is a designated Dark Sky Park making this an ideal, off the beaten track, cottage for stargazers. The space A Victorian detached stone cottage that has been recently renovated but still retains many original features including a huge stone fireplace with a woodburning stove and wooden beams. An established cottage garden is surrounded by open farmland which is ideal for country walks straight from the front door. A car is essential. Roman Cottage is near the England/Scotland border so the Scottish Border County (11 miles), the famous Northumberland Coast (36 miles) and Hadrian's Wall (22 miles) are all easily accessible. For the adventurous, Kielder Forest Drive (5 miles) and Kielder Water (19 miles) provide walking, biking and sailing opportunities. Standing on a village green, which is a wild flower meadow, the site of the cottage was used by the Romans to defend the routes to Scotland. When the Roman Empire pulled back it's frontier to Hadrian's Wall they kept Bremenium manned as outpost, the garrison was probably 6 times larger than the largest fort on the wall. It then became a defensive site for the Border Reivers during the border skirmishes and battles. Now it's a peaceful hamlet of four cottages but the defensive role hasn't ended as the modern British Army still use the moorland as a training area. You may find you have a prime view of the Artillery firing big guns and missiles, Chinooks landing, or infantry training in the woods. Woodland and moorland walks are on your doorstep and the Pennine Way comes within 3 miles of the Cottage. Up to two dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on a lead when in the vicinity of livestock and never left in the cottage by themselves. Guest access You will have the garden and the whole of the cottage.
