The Portico cabin, built in the 1870's, is cozy, rustic and carefully preserved. It is ideal for a couples getaway, small family staycation or solo retreat to escape everyday life and connect with nature. Relax on the porch rockers or cozy up by the wood stove, surrounded by books. Enjoy the cabin and surrounding 60 acres, featuring walking trails, fishing pond, a large fire pit, river access with canoes, and historic church, The Portico. Explore the nearby towns of Athens, Monroe and Madison. Look over the wall to wall bookshelves with a focus on nature, gardening and living off the land. Get out the games and puzzles and take over the dining table. Cuddle up by the wood burning stove. Wonder what it was like to live here long ago. THE KITCHEN The kitchen contains all the items you need to stay in and make your meals. We stock it with the basics for meal prep in addition to coffee, juice, farm fresh eggs and bread. If you need a particular item, we can make sure it is there before your visit. Kitchen amenities- >drip coffee maker >small oven, stove, fridge, microwave, toaster >charcoal grill on back porch THE BEDROOM queen bed quiet ac/heater oversized chair for reading armoire for a closet THE BATHROOM The bathroom is attached to the back hallway. There's a shower stall, toilet and sink. There was no bathroom when it was originally built. OUTDOOR SPACE Both porches have rocking chairs for taking in the scenery. Relax with your favorite drink and watch the clouds roll by and whatever animals wander out of the woods and into the meadow. Fireflies grace the meadow in the summer. Once you step off the porch, you have roughly 60 acres of woods to explore with walking trails by the creek, by the pond and to the river. Fishing allowed in both places. There is a rustic, outdoor shelter by the pond with a large fire pit and picnic tables. There is an old tool workshop overlooking the pond. On your walks, visit our old church event space and library, The Portico, where you can study and use the WiFi. Laundry facilities also available at The Portico. Guest access You have the entire to cabin to yourselves. Our own home is also located on the property, further down the driveway, not visible from the cabin. We are around to assist you with any needs. Wifi available nearby on our property, in The Portico. River access is dependent on the weather. If we haven't had enough rain, the river isn't easily navigable. And if we have had too much rain, the flow will be too strong. Most of the time, the river is a very pleasant place to be! Winter bookings: On very cold nights, you'll likely need to use the wood stove to provide additional heat for the cabin. We have three heathers, and electric blanket and and plenty of warm blankets, but running the wood stove will be helpful. Lee can show you how to start it and there is plenty of firewood on the front porch. On very cold nights, plan on wearing sweaters and warm socks.
