Hatteras Island: A Haven for Beach Excitement and Leisure We know the interchangeable names of Avon and Hatteras Island can be confusing. Avon is one of the more well-known “villages” on a barrier island in the southern part of the Outer Banks, known as Hatteras Island. Generally, Hatteras Island is known as more of a laidback Outer Banks area, as opposed to the busier areas of Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills. However, don’t let the opportunity for excessive leisure in Avon fool you -- there’s still plenty of exciting things to do here! First on our list is the OBX Jetovator: the only jet-propelled water sport on Hatteras Island! The Jetovator will surely provide plenty of thrills for the entire family! You may have seen them in videos -- people holding on to what looks like a pogo stick made for the water. A large cord hangs from the bottom and jets shoot you and the Jetovator straight up into the sky. Just remember to hold on tight! On another day, you can get lost in the Bermuda Triangle, OBX: a scuba diving expedition center where divers can sift through remains of more than 2,000 shipwrecks nestled in the ‘Graveyard of the Atlantic’. One ship, known as the Carroll A. Deering or ‘Ghost Ship’, wrecked on the shores of Hatteras Island with a cat, but no crew to be found, over 100 years ago. Scour these remains and others in the Graveyard of the Atlantic by booking a diving expedition at Bermuda Triangle, OBX! For a more low-key type of day, head over to Avon Fishing Pier and see what tasty catches you can reel in! Any artists in your group? If there are, they’ll surely love Studio 12: a local art studio with educational classes on painting, making jewelry, and creating pottery. Lastly, there’s never a shortage of good times at Avon Harbor Sailing. Here, you can sign up for a beautiful romantic sunset or dolphin-spotting cruise! Whether you’re up for thrills or prefer to just kick back, Avon and Hatteras Island have plenty of things to do for the entire family!
