It is located 240 metres above sea level in the southern part of the Palatinate Forest Nature Reserve Biosphere Reserve, directly on the Franco-German border. The youngest municipality in the South West Palatinate was founded in 1783 by Landgrave Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt and has developed into a popular holiday destination over the past decades.
