Mount Desert Island is about three mile away. Easy access to the Island and the coastal area East and West of the house is greatly appreciated by return guests. There are portions of the park within 5 minutes drive. 20 minutes to Bar Harbor (depends on the time of day). Great coffee and food within 5 minutes of the house. Best super market is Hannaford Brothers. There is a decent healthfood store nearby. We will provide you with a list of restaurants our friends recommend, if you are interested. The woodstove is not available for guests. The cottage faces the sunset, Blue Hill Mountain and Newberry Neck across the inter-coastal ocean area of Union River Bay. The confluence of fresh and saltwater create an interesting habitat for wildlife. A small set of wooden stairs steps down to a typical rich Maine tidal zone. At low tide rocks draped in thick tangle of yellow-green and brown-purple seaweeds (rockweed) surround our pebble beach and are an important part of our coastal ecosystem. The shore also has mussels and nooks for beachcombing and exploring. A year-round brook empties into the Bay on the south side of the property and encourages birds and other wildlife to visit the property. The large deck and balcony are great places to picnic or for sitting still and enjoying songbirds, ducks, loons, gulls, eagles, on occasion some wild turkeys, squirrels, even seals, and osprey, depending on the time of year.
