Experience eco-friendly glamping and the natural beauty of the Rio Embudo Valley in this private, quiet tiny house. The 6 acre artist’s homestead in the Sangre de Cristo foothills features earthen buildings, gardens, and land restoration projects. Visit local wineries and the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, walk to the river, or relax on the patio and watch the sunset. Located in the village of Dixon, this is a great jumping off point for mountain hikes or visits to Ghost Ranch and Taos. The artist owned and decorated space is truly tiny: about 140 square feet including the sleeping loft. This is a very special space that has a composting toilet and a bed that is accessed by climbing a ladder: please be sure to read the “Other Things to Note” section of this description. Situated in a small meadow, this comfortable, modern space is infused with natural light, and features a rotating collection of small-scale works of contemporary art. Bosque Cottage (pronounced boss-kay, this refers to the forested area that lines the river) is our beautiful property which includes the main house, a small art studio, a casita guesthouse, a large vegetable garden, and the tiny house. The property abuts the Embudo River and includes at least three distinct ecosystems: the high desert arroyo, the river, and the bosque. The two patios extend the living space, beckoning guests outdoors. The front patio is shaded in the mornings and has a chiminea fire pit, an herb garden, shade, seating, a picnic table for dining, lighting, and unobstructed sunset views of the surrounding hills and mesas. The back patio is shaded in the late afternoon and evening and has a charcoal grill (with charcoal, grill tools, and a chimney starter), seating, and shade. For sleeping, a ladder leads to the loft with a full sized bed. Downstairs, the couch can be used as a twin bed. All bedding is provided. For cooking, the tiny house is stocked with organic, fair trade coffee, tea, sugar, organic olive oil, balsamic vinegar, sea salt, and pepper. There is a Bodum pour over coffee maker, a glass electric kettle, a two-burner gas range, a mini refrigerator, a toaster, and a microwave. We also provide some very basic cookware as well as dishes and utensils. In the bathroom there is a composting toilet, a shower, and a tiny sink. We provide biodegradable, fair trade toiletries that work well with our greywater system: Alaffia African Black Soap All-in-One shampoo and body wash and Everyday Shea conditioner. The television streams Netflix, Hulu, and Hulu Live, which provides many cable and local channels. Guests can also stream music using the Pandora app on the television. The space can be kept cool with the ceiling fan and with the shades and cross breezes from the many windows. For extra climate control, however, there is also an air conditioner and a heater. Off of the front patio a short trail leads through the arroyo and the bosque to the Embudo River. At the river there is a rocky bank that is perfect for sitting and enjoying the water. (Note that during the summer in dry years, the river can be low.) One bundle of firewood and firestarter are provided for the chiminea. Additional firewood (with firestarter) can be purchased for $5.00 per bundle. Guests who wish to harvest small amounts of vegetablesfor meal preparation are welcome to do so after a quick orientation to the garden provided by one of the hosts. Tiny house guests have the entire tiny house to themselves, including its patios. All Bosque Cottage guests (casita and tiny house) have access to the arroyo, the trail to the river, the bosque, and the area of river frontage that is on our property. Guests are also welcome to enter and explore the vegetable and flower garden area. We love meeting our guests in person whenever possible and will go out of our way to welcome you and help make your stay more comfortable in any way we can. However, we will also respect your privacy and we do practice social distancing. Feel free to contact us at any time via the Airbnb app (preferred) or via text or a phone call. You will very likely see us working in the garden or in other areas of the property during your stay. Feel free to approach us and say hello! As teachers, we both have jobs off the property but have summers off and so are usually home during the summer months. Dixon is a small, agricultural community famous for its orchards. The community is very diverse and peaceful. The casita is just 25 minutes from Taos and 45 minutes from Santa Fe, and all of the cultural attractions these cities have to offer. Drive 20 minutes in another direction and you will be high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains where opportunities for hiking, fishing, and enjoying nature abound. About one mile from the tiny house is the Dixon Co-op Market, a small but well-stocked grocery store and deli. The village also has a restaurant, Zuly’s, which has excellent New Mexican food and a patio. There are three wineries very nearby, one within walking distance. Access to the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument (a.k.a., “The Gorge”) is approximately 10 miles from Bosque Cottage and not to be missed. Composting toilets save an enormous amount of water and, when used properly, are odor free. In order to avoid unpleasant smells, #1 and #2 must be kept separate. A urine diverter at the front of the bowl takes care of this. For it to work properly, though, both males and females must go #1 by sitting down. In the tiny house we provide more instructions on proper usage of the composting toilet, and we are always happy to answer any questions guests may have. The tiny house is neighbored on one side by the trees of the bosque and on the other side by our casita guest house, a second Airbnb rental that is approximately 30 feet away. The casita rents to a maximum of only three guests at a time, with an emphasis on those looking for a quiet getaway. The hosts live in the main house on the property, which is approximately 50 yards (150 feet) from the casita. Privacy is maintained using landscaping and fencing. We are able to provide parking for one vehicle only. When entering the property the driveway is a dirt road that can easily be missed. The road is narrow and can be a little rough, but it is easily accessed in a passenger vehicle most of the year. The driveway passes a couple of neighboring properties before ending at our gate, the entrance into our property.
