NOTES ON PULLMAN: The Pullman community is located on the far south side of Chicago and is in my opinion one of the most interesting and diverse areas of the city. People come from all over the world to see the historical remains (incredibly intact) of an industrialists utopian company town once touted "the worlds most perfect town". It is not the gold coast or your typical Chicago tourist spot but is instead a multicultural community engaged in preservation, restoration and re-purpose/reuse. There is a big box super store within walking distance (about a mile), a new food court with bbq and vegan options, and my favorite - an eccentric diner/restaurant for fluffy pancakes (breakfast/lunch) three blocks away. But most of your shopping /dining will likely be outside of the community (Hyde Park is a short drive or train ride away with lots of dinning, shopping, etc). Pullman is truly unique and filled with charm (and only 20-30 mins to downtown Chicago). I'm pretty sure you will fall in love. Explore The Historic Pullman community via the Visitor Center for walking tours, history of Pullman with interesting artifacts and more! Stroll through Arcade Park and gaze at the incredible restoration/renovations occurring at the Florence Hotel... then meander down the street to be charmed by the architecture of the Greenstone Church. Hop on the Metra train (Metra Electric line) for a quick 20-30 min ride to all the downtown attractions Chicago has to offer (drops you at the center of everything; Millennium Park, Cultural Center, The Art Institute of Chicago...also stops at the Museum Campus (The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum, The Field Museum, and The Shedd Aquarium), McCormick Place and Hyde Park U of C campus). SEE MORE TRAIN INFO BELOW* The Metra Electric train runs from Pullman to the Chicago loop on a posted time schedule every few minutes during rush hours to once an hour during the rest of the day/evening Monday through Saturday and every two hours on Sunday. It is a 20 - 30 min ride to downtown. The last train of the evening leaves the Chicago loop 12:50 am. You can find a complete schedule on line at the metrarail site by looking up the Metra Electric Line (ME). The Kensington / 115th Street station is an easy 3 block walk from the flat and takes you to Millennium Park station in the heart of downtown Chicago. Most everyone loves the incredibly comfortable and quick train ride! If you are going to be taking it back and forth you can buy a 10 ride pass at a reduced rate from the single ride fare and even save a little money (metra electric also offers an unlimited "weekend ride pass" for $8)... Lots of Pullman people commute to downtown everyday! Public Transportation from the airports: O'Hare: Take the blue line el to the Washington stop and walk over the the metra station at Randolph and Michigan. Take the Metra Electric University Park train to Kensington/115th station and walk 3 blocks to the flat. Very easy. Midway: Take the orange line el to the Randolph/Wabash stop and walk over to the metra station at Randolph and Michigan. Take the Metra Electric University Park train to Kensington/115th station and walk 3 blocks to the flat. Very easy. Auto travelers: We are easily accessible via interstate 94. Downtown is 20-30 mins away via car depending on traffic of course. Plenty of free street parking! Free street parking! Car is not necessary (metra train) but it can be handy to have one here.
