Our tinyhome is more than just a place to stay - It's an oasis of natural beauty and simple living. Maintained trails begin at your front door and wind throughout the farm and surrounding land. Enjoy fantastic views in all directions as you explore the stream, ponds and marshes, wild and cultivated berries, fruit and nut trees, and abundant wildlife! Only 30 minutes from some of Virginia's best hiking trails, including the Virginia 'Triple Crown'! The space - 30 minutes to hiking: McAfee's Knob, Dragon's Tooth, Tinker Cliffs, lots more! - 50 minutes to Virginia Tech - 45 minutes to Carvin's Cove (fishing, boat rentals, hiking) - 45 minutes to canoe/kayak rental on the James or Roanoke Rivers - 5 minutes to the town of New Castle (grocery store, limited dining, gas stations) - 35 minutes to Salem/Roanoke - plenty of restaurants/breweries/etc. Our 100 acre farm is actively managed to provide habitat for native species of all kinds. The tinyhouse is designed for simplicity and comfort. Come and experience a truly peaceful retreat from the rest of the world. The tinyhouse was 100% custom designed and built by my father and myself. It was a labor of love and I think it shows in all the thoughtful details and top-quality craftsmanship throughout the home. Visitors always say it seems so much bigger on the inside! Two guests will be very comfortable in the space, and 3 can be accommodated easily, as long as you definitely like each other! :) The main level has a living area, generously-sized kitchen, and full bathroom. The sleeping area is a loft which is accessible ONLY by a ladder. LIVING AREA: Offers a full-size couch, a fold-out table with folding chairs, a smart TV, and a closet for guest storage. There is even a hammock that can be hung across the living area if you like! KITCHEN: Features a gas stove, plenty of counter space, a large double sink (no dishwasher), a fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and electric kettle. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics to cook a full meal, as well as 4 place settings. Coffee, tea selection, creamer and sweeteners, pancake mix, oatmeal, snack bars, popcorn, hot chocolate, etc are complementary. A gas grill is also provided outside for guest use. BATHROOM: Has a combination deep soaking tub / shower, and an instant hot water heater so the hot water never runs out! Towels and all the basic toiletries are provided. LOFT: Is accessible by a ladder and features a double bed and very plush carpet (the loft has a low ceiling so crawling is required!), as well as plenty of windows for an "indoors but feels like outdoors" sleeping experience when the weather is nice. Listen to the crickets chirp and wake up to songbirds! This space offers a wonderful and unique experience but the loft must be enjoyed carefully and responsibly. PLEASE NOTE: The loft is not suitable for anyone who might have trouble climbing a ladder or crawling a short distance. Please book responsibly, and exercise caution when using the loft and ladder. Use extra care when using the loft ladder at night, and please do not use the loft when inebriated. OUTSIDE SPACES: The front porch is a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy the sunset. A fire ring with chairs is provided for campfires under the stars. A raised garden bed features flowers, herbs, and cherry tomatoes in the summer - help yourself! TRAILS: The many maintained trails throughout our 100 acre farm are easily accessible from the tinyhouse. An online GPS-enabled map is provided so you can explore with confidence! There are open fields, marshes, ponds, wooded trails, and many benches scattered throughout. Please feel free to explore! Guest access In addition to the tinyhouse and surrounding yard, guests also have access to maintained trails throughout the property (shared access with the hosts). Our 100 acre farm includes fields and wetlands as well as forested hills, and has been actively managed (through the Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program) for over a decade to re-introduce native species and create natural habitat for wildlife of all kinds. Feel free to explore, we only ask that you respect the privacy of the yards surrounding the other two homes on the farm. When exploring the trails please do not cross any fences (to ensure we respect our neighbor's property as well). We hope you enjoy the beauty of the farm as much as we do! Other things to note We are out in the country and that means wildlife is everywhere! You will likely see deer feeding in the fields during the morning and evening hours. We have chickens so don't be surprised if you hear them or see them foraging for bugs. We do have a gentle dog who is sometimes outside and may come ask for rubs. We also have a few farm cats who you'll probably see out hunting in the fields, but they are unlikely to approach you. Major carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-mobile, and US Cellular all have coverage here at the tinyhouse. Wifi is also provided for guests!
