The space Werden House is a well-maintained century home located on Main St. in Picton. The home was built by Montalbert Werden – a descendant of a wealthy miller named Asa Werden – and it is featured in “The Settlers Dream,” a key pictorial history of the older buildings of Prince Edward County. With its intricately detailed front porch (a combination of Victorian and Italica styles) and 10 ft. high ceilings, Werden House is described as the “quintessential brick of the 1880s.” Step back in time through the 9.5-ft. high double front oak doors into the grand foyer, and climb the 18-step staircase – with its elaborately carved wooden stairs, moulding, and panelling – to the fully self-contained private Suite on the second floor. At almost 850 sq. ft., the Suite is spacious and bright, with 9 ft. wide bay windows in both the living and dining rooms. The living room includes a large couch and two lovely tub chairs. WiFi is provided as well as a wide variety of books and board games. There is no TV in the suite. The dining room contains an extendable walnut table and two comfy armchairs in the bay window. The kitchen is equipped with an old pine, water-wheel cut, apple orchard/cider-making table with seating and with comprehensive staple kitchenware and basic amenities (e.g., coffee, tea, sugar, basic spices, etc.). Groceries and meals must be self-catered and/or self-prepared. The Suite contains one (1) separate bedroom with a comfortable queen-sized bed and an attached three-piece ensuite bathroom with the original marble sink and claw foot bathtub. Linens, kitchen, bathroom, and beach towels are provided. Future improvements to the suite include restoring the original oak hardwood floors and updating the kitchen and bathroom. In the meantime, there is the 1930's linoleum flooring throughout the suite as well as an older kitchen. And, while the original claw foot bathtub has a handheld extension useful for a sitting shower, there is currently no standing shower in the suite. Lastly, please note that there are four separate units in the house: the fully self-contained Airbnb suite on the second floor, the main floor suite (occupied by the Host), and two separate units with long-term tenants in the basement and rear of the house. The Airbnb suite itself is quiet and private. Guest access You will have secure access to the entire self-contained and secure one-bedroom suite on the second floor of the house via entryway through the main floor 9 1/2 ft. tall front doors. Other things to note A portable air-conditioner and numerous fans are provided in this century home. A friendly miniature hypoallergenic Poodle (Ari - short for Aristotle) is in the Host’s main floor suite. Please be aware that Werden House is located on Main St., which can get quite busy during the day in the summer. While the Suite does not contain a laundry machine, a laundry facility is available a 2-minute drive away in the local Plaza. Guests are encouraged to share any comments, either directly with the Host or in the guest book in the main foyer. Any Guest suggestions for ways in which Werden House may continue to be improved are much appreciated and valued. We look forward to greeting you at Werden House, whether it is a return visit or your first visit.
