Catskill Retreat
Slow down and relax in this split-level cottage in the woods. With a waterfall crossing underneath the deck, the cottage features stone floors, living room with stone fireplace, large bedroom and loft, and a well-equipped kitchen to prepare dinner on the screened porch. Just a mile away from a supermarket, restaurants, a bakery, and a weekly farmer's market. NOTE: THE LAKE IS DRY IN SUMMER IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE. It can fill up in fall to an extent. Vegetation has been growing in the lake bed. From the parking area, you descend stairs to the house, which is built into the contours of the hill. The bedroom has a queen bed, and the loft has two twin mattresses on the floor. Note that the loft has a very low ceiling. Access to the loft, which has a steep staircase, is through the bedroom: this arrangement works best for families or close friends. The living room sofa converts to a queen bed. The screened porch is great for meals, work, and listening to the frogs late at night. There's a deck/bridge next to the house over the waterfall with a bench and a lawn next to the house, accessible by descending stairs. Amenities include washer and dryer in the basement, internet, and a television with Roku, a DVD player and an assortment of DVDs, but no cable TV. While the house has its luxuries, including a lovely bathroom with tub, it’s intimate with the forest, so you will encounter your occasional creepy-crawly or forest mouse. There is no air conditioning, but you will find movable fans. The road to the house is gravel. In wintertime, four-wheel drive is a must! Guests have access to all parts of the house and grounds. We are reachable via email or phone/text and happy to steer you toward great places to visit in the vicinity. The house is eight miles from BETHEL WOODS CENTER OF THE ARTS (the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), which features music concerts. It also has exhibition programs and activities celebrating the '60s. Other nearby music festivals are the WEEKEND OF CHAMBER MUSIC (a mile away) throughout July and August and the SHANDALEE MUSIC FESTIVAL (7 miles away) in August. The home of the DELAWARE VALLEY ARTS ALLIANCE in Narrowsburg (17 miles away) features film screenings (e.g., September's Big Eddy Film Festival), art exhibitions, and ongoing theater productions at the TUSTEN THEATER. Antique stores are throughout western Sullivan County, and there's a great year-round farmer's market in Callicoon, a 10-mile drive. You're also five miles from Villa Roma, a resort with skiing in the winter and an outdoor pool in the summer. There's a Shortline bus between NYC and Jeffersonville once a day during the summer. And there is local taxi service. The ceiling in the sleep loft has a steep slant. Its highest area is 6.5' (see pictures). In early fall, when the rains set in, the lake fills up and can be used for canoeing and fishing. Since it has been drying more and more in the increasing heat and vegetation began to grow, access to the lake might not be right in front of the house. It changes all the time, depending on weather, so it's hard to predict.
