Potluck String Lodge (PSL) is situated within Prairie Island Campground along the Mississippi River. With cottony sheets, coffee & towels, paddle sport equipment & bikes, and an outdoor fire ring, you can simply show-up, relax, reconnect, and recreate. This tiny house tells a story about the Boats and Bluegrass music festival and one of the campground picking circles hosted by the Potluck String Band. Upon arriving to Prairie Island Campground (PIC) and the Potluck String Lodge (PSL), YOU ARE HERE. Time slows in this site alongside the Mississippi River, the place that many paths and roads have led to. Allow casting a line, a flickering fire, taking a stroll, or sinking a paddle in the water to spur reflection and direction on where to go from here. In the words of Kenny Salway, the Last River Rat, "Each time that you step in the river, you never step into the same river. Change is the only constant." Discover new inspiration in the deeper truths that surface when in natural places. One canoe, 1-kayak, and 2-cruiser bikes, are included in your stay! Additional equipment such as Stand up Paddle boards, and additional boats and bikes may be rented through our rental service. Don't forget the bug repellent! The PSL is situated in the backwaters of the Mississippi River valley which is teeming with life. Also, a gas grill and a fire ring are available for outdoor cooking. PIC boasts a vibrant Community Garden and Campstore where guests may connect with other guests, gather a few fresh ingredients for a meal when the garden is in production, and appreciate the efforts of local artists. You can purchase firewood, ice, snacks, Prairie Island Campground apparel, and bug repellent. During most weekends between June and August, we host the Campfire Concert Series, yoga, fun family educational programming that centers on observing the surrounding ecology, and movies projected on an outdoor screen. Please check the calendar on Prairie Island Campground's website for more up to date information on events. Potluck String Lodge (PSL) is located in the City of Winona municipal campground. While the weekdays are very quiet, the weekends typically bring more activity. The tiny house is located in a spacious camping site at the west end of the campground. Folks are tent camping in adjacent sites. As guests of Prairie Island Campground, you have access to a swimming beach and dock, boat launch, the Community Garden, and an 18-hole frisbee golf course (as long as its not a holiday). The greater Prairie Island park includes the Black Bird Slough canoe trail, shoreline fishing, 3+ miles of river bottom forested hiking trails, boat launches, dog park, and more! Downtown Winona is just a 20-30 minute bike ride. Please view the website for Prairie Island Campground and Visit Winona for more information about regional cultural and outdoor recreation opportunities. The paddle sport equipment will be accessible starting Memorial Day weekend through the middle of September, as long as the river conditions (flow, level, wind, and temperature) are within safe parameters. A campground host is on site at all times and can be reached by phone if any questions or concerns arise. Please let us know if you are staying longer and interested in having the space, linens, and towels refreshed. The greater Prairie Island (PI) Park is located in the river bottoms, on the MInnesota side of Lock and Dam 5A, at the upper end of Pool 6. Near-by boat launches provide access to Pool 5A. There is access to backwater paddling routes, the main channel for motor boating, good fishing, a beach, hiking trails, a dog park, and more. PSL is just a 5 minutes drive or 20 minute bike ride to downtown Winona. You can stroll the streets of this 170 year old river town, go shopping, visit art and history museums, take in one of its many festivals throughout the year, and dine at Nosh Scratch Kitchen. Winona is also home to outdoor recreation opportunities of paddling and bird watching in the backwaters, hiking and mountain biking the trails around Holzinger Lodge, road biking through the valleys, and rock climbing on the Sugar Loaf. Perot and Whitewater State Park are just a 45 minute drive from PIC, and the Great River State Trail in Wisconsin will soon be accessible right from our downtown. PSL is a 5 minute drive or 20 minute bike ride to downtown Winona. Lyft service available as well. About 3-miles of walking trails meander through the marshland and along the river.
