The Goat Pens is a primitive campground located on the 640 acre Cigar Springs Ranch. Easily the largest and most reviewed Hipcamp in Terlingua, The Goat Pens are now booking through Airbnb! We are easily accessed and located on South County Road. This central location provides an ideal basecamp close to the Terlingua Ghost Town, (with quick access to local nightlife and restaurants), and within of a short drive of Big Bend National and State Parks. The unique geology and topography of the Goat Pens made this a popular movie set and many westerns were filmed here in the 80's and 90's. Even now the remains of some sets can be found on the property. Come out and enjoy seclusion, peace and quiet, awesome scenery, all while still being able to easily take advantage of the area's other attractions. The Goat Pens includes an outdoor events venue that occasionally hosts concerts, stargazing parties, festivals and weddings. The Goat Pens also has the only drive-in movie theater in the Big Bend area (set up for large groups can be arranged at an additional cost!). Send a message or check The Goat Pens (Hidden by Airbnb) page for information and dates of events. Our guests are free to roam the entirety of the ranch as long as they respect the space and keep both on-road and off-road vehicles out of restricted areas. We do welcome off-road vehicle enthusiasts to come to our property, as South County road is an ideal place for driving them, but leaving the road can cause long-lasting damage and erosion to many of these geological wonders, as well as risking the chance of trespass on nearby private property not owned by the ranch. We have 2 vault toilets, with solar powered hand washing sinks. The water is NON-POTABLE, and the sinks are not meant for washing your dishes: bring your own camp water, we're in the desert y'all! We also have one off-grid propane and solar heated shower. Our water is hauled by hand, uphill. Please be conscientious of your use. Unless otherwise arranged I will always try to meet you to go over the locations of our dispersed camp sites, and help you find a spot that will best fit your needs. The Goat Pens are a must-see for geology buffs. It and cigar springs ranch contain rare geological formations including volcanic ash, gypsum sand (such as the type seen at White Sands National Monument), red sandstone (one of the only locations featuring this in Big Bend), natural cave formations, and more. Our guests are free to roam the entirety of the ranch as long as they respect the space and keep both on-road and off-road vehicles out of restricted areas. We do welcome off-road vehicle enthusiasts to come to our property, as South County road is an ideal place for driving them, but leaving the road can cause long-lasting damage and erosion to many of these geological wonders, as well as risking the chance of tresspass on nearby private property not owned by the ranch. South county road, leading to the Goat Pens, is a well maintained dirt county road, and can be driven by any type of vehicle. Other than the local highways and the main ghost town road, all roads in this area are dirt! This is a primitive camping site. While it should be obvious we need to clearly state: you need to bring your own tent and bedding. There are bathrooms with running water, soap and hand sanitizer, as well as an outdoor shower. Many of our sites do have fire rings. Some do not. What you choose is entirely up to you. County burn bans do not at any time apply to fires contained within rock-lined fire pits for the purpose of providing heat or for use of food preparation. We do not have designated sites, as it is much easier for guests to choose where they'd like to stay once they arrive. We are on hundreds of acres. If we do not have enough availability for you on Airbnb we can absolutely still host you. We have had over 50 groups of campers at a time during spring break, we can certainly make room for you! More than 2 tents requires booking a second site. Each site accommodates 6 people. The first 4 people are covered by the $40 nightly rate. Each person over 4 is an additional $5 per night, per person.
