The property manager, who is located in Hot Springs, is available on site as needed and only 15 minutes away. The property was the site of Gilbert Walking Bull's Lakota camps for both youth and adults, and Walking Bull Ranch Retreat will continue to host and assist with youth camps for Lakota youth from Pine Ridge for a few weeks each summer. Cabin rentals will support those humanitarian and educational efforts as well as host planned cross-cultural seminars and retreats as soon as the Covid pandemic allows. Walking Bull Ranch is 15-20 minutes from Custer, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument and all Black Hills sites. The Ranch is also 15-20 minutes from Hot Springs with the Hot Springs Plunge Pool, the Mammoth Site, and the River Walk. Rapid City Airport is only 80 minutes away. Devils Tower and Wall Drug as well as the Badlands are easy driving distance. The quiet serenity of the 40 acres with its native wildlife greets you after a busy day seeing the above. Also close to the public accesses to the Michelson Trail for hiking, biking, or horse back riding. Great places to eat in either Custer or Hot Springs. The Ranch is surrounded by national grasslands, local ranches, just down the road from the Black Hills National Forrest and Custer State Park with the largest buffalo herd in North America. During the pandemic this is one of the safest placed to stay and still see all the surrounding sites of the Black Hills Region. Two-Stall Horse Barn and Training Corral also available upon special request. Lots of tent camping areas for free available for larger family groups or retreats but campers must share bathrooms with cabin residents. We take extra care with cleaning and sanitizing each cabin for your safety and you are away from crowds. Hwy 89 North borders the NE side of the property and is your access to either Custer or Hot Springs. Both towns host grocery stores, libraries, tourist shops, and great places to see and dine in. Your are surrounded by the beautiful forests and meadows of the Black Hills Area and all its sites including Sylvan Lake, Black Elk Peak, the Needles Highway not to mention the buffalo of Custer State Park and the various caves of the region. Rapid City Airport is 80 minutes away. Rental cars are available at the airport or in Rapid City. Cabins in this region are on cisterns due to the granite/stone geology of the Black Hills, i.e., its impossible to dig deep wells. Rental price for each cabin includes 1800 gal. of free Hot Springs city water in the cisterns at each cabin. You might want to bring bottled water if you don't like the taste of processed city water for drinking. The Bunkhouse rents for $300 per night and the Log Cabin rents for $200 per night In addition to the rental price, there is a $300.00 cleaning fee for the Bunkhouse ($200 for the Log Cabin) with a four night minimum stay; and a $200.00 cleaning fee for the Cabin (4 night minimum stay) as well as a $500 security refundable security deposit for each building. The security deposit will be refunded after the property manager inspects each cabin after your rental for any damage, or evidence of smoking in each building. Smoking inside is prohibited but outside is ok....just be careful not to start a forrest fire!! (See Property Rules). Cabins in the woods (esp. log cabins) attract insects. Each cabin will be cleaned and sprayed before your visit, but the Fall Season especially attracts boxelder bugs and other insect species. A few bugs may appear, esp. in the cabin even after the above cleaning protocols. This is just part of living in the country and in a 40 acre forrest. None of these insects are dangerous. Just sweep them up and throw them out the door or in the trash if you find any. We will do our best to inspect each cabin again right before your visit. Up to two pets/dogs are allowed just please keep them off the two carpeted bedrooms in the Bunkhouse.
