Description
This tiny cabin is nestled in the woods, far from the noise of modern life. Originally built by my mom, “Oma,” to use as a retreat while visiting her grandkids, it's a green paradise in the summer and, with its cute woodstove, a warm and cozy retreat in the winter. 'Oma's Cabin' is located up Tunket Road in the Mettowee Valley of Pawlet, VT - our driveway is also the trailhead for Haystack Mt., so you have a spectacular hike out your front door. Cabin is HIKE-IN ONLY during the winter. The space The cabin is 12' x 12', and has - No electricity. - No running water, but we provide water in a full 5 gallon jug that can be refilled as necessary. - Cabin now has bottom sheets, pillows, and covered down duvets (in the European style) for the convenience of our guests. Aside from that, the cabin has all you need for a quiet getaway: a kitchen, a woodstove, a front porch, a fire circle, an outhouse, and hundreds of acres of forest. The kitchen has a two-burner propane stove, a cooler, dishes, utensils, pots, and pans (everything you might need). For sleeping, this cabin has two camp mattresses in the upstairs loft. They will have bottom sheets, pillows, and covered down duvets - European-style bedding. Situated on 150 acres (and over 500 feet from our house), this is a one-of-a-kind quiet, secluded setting for relaxing and recharging. This 144 sq ft cabin is much like luxurious camping: - We now provide bottom sheets, pillows, and covered down duvets (in the European style) for the comfort of our guests. The beds are camp mattresses and can be moved around to reconfigure the beds. We do not provide towels. - The cabin has a small woodstove, with wood for it provided, but bring warm clothes also, so you can enjoy being outside. - 5 gallons of drinking water will be provided. - There is an outhouse with a sawdust bucket toilet. - There is no electricity or WiFi - please bring headlamps and LED lanterns for light. - Cell service is mostly non-existent - cabin sometimes gets one bar. This is also true for most of Vermont. - Hiking out the front door. Nearby Recreation: The Haystack Mountain Trail, part of The Nature Conservancy’s North Pawlet Hills Natural Area and a popular day hike featuring a 360-degree view of surrounding mountains and the Mettawee Valley from the summit, starts off our driveway. The entire hike is 3 miles out-and-back from the cabin. If you choose to leave your secluded retreat, Owl’s Head Trail, Equinox Mountain, Emerald Lake and Lake Saint Catherine State Park are all nearby, providing additional opportunities to hike and swim. Farm: Our off-grid property is a working homestead and farm, stocked with heritage breed animals. We have a small flock of laying hens, some ducks, and a herd of 40 American Milking Devon cattle. The upper portion of our farm is entirely off-grid solar (our solar panels charge batteries - there are no power lines). The lower portion of our farm, closer to the bottom of Tunket Road and comprised of a barn and pastures for our cattle, is grid-tied solar (the solar power goes into the electric grid during the day and we draw from the grid at night). The buildings have been built by us over the past 25 years. If you're curious, the development and building of our homestead was detailed in our 2010 book 'Up Tunket Road', which is now out-of-print but can be found on Amazon and is also available for purchase in the cabin. Gas and groceries are available in the village of Pawlet at Sheldon's or Mach's Market (4 miles away), or in the larger town of Granville, NY (7 miles away). There is a restaurant in Pawlet, and other restaurants and cafes in the nearby towns of Wells, Poultney, Granville, Dorset, and Manchester. We will be happy to give you recommendations. Guest Amenities: This cozy cabin has a propane cookstove, a woodstove, an outhouse with a sawdust bucket toilet, and a bucket shower (heat water, pour in, hoist up - summer use only). Other things to note: 1. Our driveway is 1 mile long - and a little rustic. You will need to proceed carefully so as not to damage your car. Parking at the cabin is a 100 ft walk to cabin.
