You can also message us, to find out more about any reservation, as we are somewhat flexible on the exact schedule or length of any visit. (Even tho a time may be blocked, you can ask about it!) If you are not familiar with San Rafael, it is easiest to plan a first arrival in daylight but not absolutely necessary. The streets to my house are winding, hilly, and narrow and some visitors find them challenging to navigate at night. But if you use the maps provided it should be fine. It is private, quiet, and peaceful. A little info for first-time visitors to the SF bay area: - San Rafael is close to SF, but not actually part of the city. In fact, we are across the Golden Gate Bridge from SF, in Marin County (also called the "north bay"). It is less than 15 miles to downtown from our house, but can take longer than you might expect with the bridge and city traffic. Many guests stay with us to enjoy the green space and beauty of Marin (trails, paddling, Mt Tamalpais, Muir Woods, Angel Island, Stinson beach, SF Bay, Pacific ocean) but still with easy access to the city for some sightseeing there. - There is excellent public transit between San Rafael and SF, and adequate transit around Marin County. The most convenient/frequent schedules run M-F, and directed at commuters. Weekend schedules require some planning. There is no late-night service to & from SF. The many different ferries are an excellent way to sightsee and a great transportation mode. MUST DO- LARKSPUR FERRY TO SF! - There is little to no effective transit directly between Marin and other parts of the bay area (i.e. east bay, etc). You would have to go through the SF and this makes for a long trip. BART does not service the north bay at all. - SFO is convenient to reach via transit or driving. So is Oakland convenient by car, but difficult to get to by public transit from here. There are door-to-door shuttles but they are fairly expensive. ** Please note that to keep some flexibility for ourselves & visiting family/friends, we do not accept reservation requests for the distant future. We usually open up the calendar for the few upcoming months only. If you're considering a stay beyond that period, check with owner. Here is a recent National article ranking San Rafael as one of the top, "small cities". San Rafael Cracks ‘Most Exciting Small Cities’ Rankings Marin’s Mission City ranks 11th in a national real estate research survey. If you like live music and can’t stand endless parades of fast-food joints, you’d be hard pressed to find a better small city in the United States than San Rafael. That’s according to an online research report published earlier this week. headlined “These Are the 10 Most Exciting Small Cities in America.” San Rafael just barely missed the top 10, polling 11th overall. The article includes a list of the top 50 most exciting small cities out of a 140 with populations between 50,000 and 60,000. Movoto judged the cities in six categories categories (live music, fast food, nightlife, active life, non-fast food percentage and young residents). San Rafael is among six California cities to make the top 50 and ranks the highest overall in the state according to the poll. Petaluma, which ranks 34th, is the only other Bay Area city to make the list. The other California cities mentioned are National City (32nd), La Mesa (33rd), Gardena (38th) and Arcadia (47th). Hoboken, N.J. topped the rankings that appear to have a heavy East Coast-tilt. Only two of the top 10 cities are west of the Mississippi (No. 6 Manhattan, Kan., and No. 9 San Marcos, Texas). San Rafael was ranked No. 3 in the live music and non-fast food percentage rank, and is the eighth most active city according to the poll. Guest Access Private entrance and exit to your vehicle. Interaction with Guests: I am always available via text to answer questions or give my 35+year Bay Area expertise on restaurants, sight seeing, day trips, SF, Wine Country, Tahoe, or the beach! The location and neighborhood is very popular. (also noted several times in the reviews) A safe and private spot but just minutes from the freeway to go in any direction. Take a moment to look at the map and do the street view option if you can. Other things to note FYI- My 4th BR is actually a 375 sq. ‘ guest suite, with a large living room, 50” TV, office desk, refrigerator, floor to ceiling windows with a views of the SF Bay, & complete bathroom. Besides a door to the living space, it has a private sliding glass entrance/exit door to the new huge deck, then has a separate entrance to the street. Has been used for a live-in nanny, parents, visitors, guests , or young college age students. Or just the 4th BR! I keep the large portable AC unit on site hooked up in the living room. Another is in the closet for either bedroom. And a cooling tower. They are not used much, but can also be easily rolled to any other spaces. There is an ADU in this large house. It has a private, separate entrance. Also, Ask about the two mailboxes, out front.
