Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire and a former spa town situated at a sharp bend in the River Derwent. The town is located on the edge of the Peak District National Park and is surrounded by spectacular hills and limestone cliffs. Today these cliffs attract rock climbers and the magnificent riverside setting in a steep wooded gorge, attracts walkers and canoeists. The Matlock Valley is honeycombed with both caves and old lead mine workings, some of which are thought to date back to Roman times. The town is home to the Peak District Lead Mining Museum where you can take a tour of Temple Mine. This area witnessed the birth of the Industrial Revolution and visitors can still tour Arkwright’s water-powered cotton mill and Masson Mill.
