The space The popular veneration that has always enveloped the memory of NOSTRADAMUS has preserved by oral tradition the family home on the paternal side from which the extraordinary epic of the "Nostredame" began. This Spanish family of Jewish faith (Tribe of Yissaskar) seeking the protection of the Christian Church of Occitania and the bishops of Aleth crossed the Pyrenees. It settled permanently in the heart of the chosen valley "Vicus Electensis" near the former Benedictine Abbey Nostredame d'Aleth or Sainte Marie d'Aleth in the secular city surrounded by walls. The initial house with earth walls and carved wood architecture was built in the 13th century with identifying signs that made it possible to identify the Jewish inhabitants related to the Lords of Carcassonne Trencavel. Remodeled in the 15th century, the house was enlarged with reused beams to enhance the commercial part with the ground floor shop overlooking the Place du Puits (now Place de la République). Damaged during the Wars of Religion, after the death of Michel de Nostredame, the house was restored under the reign of Henry IV and then Louis XIV. The house itself is indeed an authentic Medieval and Renaissance residence of Occitan merchants. Built in ocher sandstone from Aleth, and with half-timbering, i.e. wood and cob, it has remarkable corbels with massive oak beams carved with strange and symbolic designs. Topped with a single-pitched roof, its main façade is pierced on the 1st and 2nd floors by a small-paned window, and on the ground floor by a large bay window used for the secular shop. Carefully maintained for centuries by these different owners, it was just restored in 2020 to regain its radiance and comfort. Nostradamus' house has always been a place of commerce, culture and habitation. It was acquired and used by families who have preserved its exceptional character in the heart of the former spiritual capital of Razès: Alet-les-Bains. Since the 2020 restoration, the interior, consisting of 4 small rooms, has regained its original volumes and colors. The dark oak woods were once again able to rub shoulders with the plaster stuccos and white, red or ocher lime whitewash. The decoration today tells us about the different Medieval, Renaissance and Classical periods, combining furniture, paintings and historical objects related to Nostradamus and the life of the episcopal city. On the ground floor, the shop has become the living room with kitchenette and living room. On the 1st floor are the Bathroom and Bedroom 1. On the 2nd floor is Bedroom 2.
