Other things to note Amazing historical artifacts nearby: ✔️Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods The Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods in Nea Makri, Greece, is a unique archaeological site dating back to approximately 150–160 AD. Commissioned by Herodes Atticus, a prominent Roman-era orator and sophist, the sanctuary was part of his estate and reflects the cultural syncretism of the time. Dedicated to Egyptian deities such as Isis, Osiris, and Horus, the complex features architectural elements reminiscent of Egyptian temples, including pylons and a central structure possibly shaped like a pyramid. Statues of these deities adorned the entrances, emphasizing the Egyptian origins of the cult. The sanctuary's design, with its courtyards and ritual spaces, suggests it was used for processions and ceremonies honoring the gods. Today, visitors can explore the ruins and gain insight into the fusion of Greek and Egyptian religious practices during the Roman period. ✔️Marathon Archaeological Museum and Battlefield The Archaeological Museum of Marathon, situated in Vranas, Attica, offers a comprehensive exploration of the region's history from the Neolithic era to the Roman period. Its permanent exhibition features artifacts from prehistoric cemeteries at Vrana and Tsepi, relics from the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC—including items from the tombs of fallen Athenians and Plataeans—and objects from the Roman-era Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods at Brexiza. The museum's collection is displayed across five rooms and a covered atrium, providing visitors with insights into the area's rich archaeological heritage. ✔️Marathon artificial lake Marathon Lake, located in Attica, Greece, is an artificial reservoir created in the 1920s to supply water to Athens. Formed by the construction of the Marathon Dam, it holds historical significance as a major infrastructure project of its time. Beyond its utilitarian purpose, the lake is nestled amidst scenic surroundings, offering a tranquil environment for visitors. The area around the lake is popular for outdoor activities such as walking, picnicking, and nature observation, making it a favored spot for both locals and tourists seeking relaxation and natural beauty. ✔️Marathon run museum The Marathon Road Promotion Centre, established in 2004 in the historic 1908 primary school of Marathon funded by Andreas Syngrou, houses the permanent exhibition “Olympic Marathons,” donated by the Olympic Museum of Lausanne. This exhibition traces the history of the Marathon race through photographs and texts, evolving into a sports museum in 2007 with over 4,000 exhibits. It is divided into two sections: one dedicated to the history of Olympic Marathons and another showcasing the global marathon movement, including themes on worldwide marathons, Olympic champions, women’s participation, and runners’ equipment. ✔️Ramnous archaeological site The ancient municipality of Ramnous, located in northeastern Attica near Marathon, is a well-preserved archaeological site that offers a glimpse into ancient Greek civilization. Situated approximately 60 kilometers from Athens, the site includes remnants of a fortified settlement with public buildings, sanctuaries, and residential areas, reflecting continuous habitation since the Neolithic period. Notably, it houses the sanctuary of Nemesis, the most significant of its kind in Greece, alongside a temple dedicated to Themis. Visitors can explore the sacred road leading to the acropolis, guided by informative staff and even a friendly local dog named Murphy. The natural surroundings remain largely unchanged, providing a serene backdrop to this historical locale. Registration Details 00000264427
