Description

Historic railcar built in the 30's by The Budd Company and located on Skaneateles Lake. Enjoy morning coffee and evening barbecues overlooking this most beautiful of lakes. Ideal for train enthusiasts, boaters, swimmers, fisherman and those wanting to simply kick off their shoes and relax in this most unique property on Skaneateles Lake. The space The car is 83ft long, recently refreshed. Separated into 3 bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a kitchen, dinning area, sitting area and Deck. There is a fire pit, with comfy intentionally weathered and sealed Adirondack chairs. A large dock has more seating, providing both serenity on clear nights, and fun, sitting 20ft into this amazing lake. The property sits on 6 acres reaching back 1500+ft into public land, great for hiking and exploring. We maintain it as an all season base for train enthusiasts, vacationing, fishing, boating, hunting, cross country skiing and just relaxing. There is a gas barbeque on the upper deck at the end of the car a perfect place for early morning coffee, breakfast or just hanging out. There is a Bunk bed in room 1 with a single above and a double below, sleeps three. The middle room is small, but has a single full and a very tight pull out trundle for a toddler. The Master room has a Queen. The living room also has a futon that folds out to a queen size bed. The train has proved very comfortable for six, although it will sleep 8. It sits in a luscious wood made up of maple, oak and cherry trees, the perfect back drop to the beautiful lake at the front. The woods are a lovely walk if you can navigate the steep initial climb. This is the country side, so along with the fresh wilderness, means you may encounter deer, raccoons, we see foxes, cute water mammals (musk rats, we have seen a pair of otters and the like), bats over the lake if you are lucky (cool to watch), we have a nesting pair of bald eagles, and the occasional bees, wasps, butterflies, spiders, lovely birds, the odd mouse....what you would expect in the country side. While I am not a fisherman, come prepared with your permit, the fishing is apparently excellent. Guest access The Property sits on the left off North Glen Haven Road driving North from the South. A narrow country road, it is commonly used by walkers and cyclists and runs through the property. For most its charming and a nice part of the friendly summer ambiance that shared along the south end of the lake, during the winter it is little used. The Deck, Dock, Fire pit areas are comfortably private and secluded. There is adequate parking for five cars. Other things to note All five of my Children have fond memories going back as far as they care to remember of their lives on the lake, and especially at the rail car. We still stay hear quite often despite having a house further up the lake, it draws you in that way. Intended to be used and enjoyed, the lake itself is pristine and truly spectacular. So you know, the water in the car comes directly out of the lake unfiltered and untreated, yet crystal clear. While we have always drunk it as is, I suggest you bring bottle water if this at all concerns you.
