The tranquil Thornton beck winds through the village, with many walking trails to follow. On the village green there’s the original stocks and market cross, where on Sundays during the summer months. local bands plays music to entertain you whilst you sit back and enjoy one of the wonderful ice-creams the village is renowned for. Only a couple of miles away is the traditional Yorkshire market town of Pickering, which combines atmospheric old inns, 12th-century castle, museum, remarkable medieval frescoes in the local church, and the North York Moors Railway taking visitors on a nostalgic steam train journey through the spectacular heather-clad moorland scenery. The ancient City of York is just 26 miles away and offers the majestic minster, the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum, and excellent shopping facilities. Castle Howard, setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited, Nunnington Hall (National Trust), Duncombe Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few of the local treasures to discover.
