Visitors to Dalmatia often head straight for the islands, but the Makarska Riviera is home to some of the country’s loveliest stretches of beach. Zaostrog itself is built around a deep sheltered bay, and backed by the dramatic rocky height Viter (770 metres) of Mount Biokovo, which acts as a buffer from the harsher inland climate. The main draw here is magnificent shingle beach, which shelves into the see-through waters of the Adriatic Sea. Zaostrog’s beach is a long curving stretch of pebble, behind which runs a shady promenade with several cafés, restaurants and ice cream parlours. This work by legendary Croatian architect Ivo Vitić, one of the creators of the Croatian postmodern architecture, is completely renovated in 2014 and furnished with authentic period pieces and artwork. It is without a doubt one of the finest properties available to rent in the area. Access Zaostrog is located on coastal road D8 Split-Dubrovnik, about 1 hr 30 min drive from Split or Dubrovnik airport. There are regular long-distance buses along the coast from Split to Ploče and Dubrovnik, and local buses between the villages of the Makarska Riviera. The facility is easily accessed by villa’s gate from the quaint local coastal walkway, which opens into a private courtyard with own garage for 1 car and additional 4 parking places, all available free of charge to guests only. Ferries depart daily to the island of Hvar from neighbouring village Drvenik, to Pelješac Peninsula (where from island Korčula is reachable) depart from nearby Ploce (less than 20 min driving distance) and to Brač depart from nearby Makarska (less than 30 min driving distance). Split, Međugorje and Dubrovnik are all just an hour’s drive away from THE SPOT. The villa The house stretches on more than 300 sqm on two levels. Ground floor is accessed by two entrances and consists of a hallway with 3 cosy bedrooms (2 with a sea view) to accommodate up to 6 persons, a modern bathroom and spacious stairs leading to the grand first floor. The magnificent lounge on a first floor, complete with large open fireplace and dining area, spreads over 50 sqm and boasts four French doors opening out onto a sea facing huge balcony with spectacular Adriatic archipelago view. This floor accommodates the master double bedroom with a sea view, one twin bedroom and a splendid bathroom with a tub. The lounge further opens out into a studio area and a large, fully equipped hi-tech kitchen with induction cooktop, refrigerator, oven and a microwave oven, a dishwasher, washing machine, espresso machine, bread toaster, mixer, citrus press and hand blender etc. From the kitchen a back door opens out onto several garden terraces, accessible too from the front and side of the villa, all on their own levels with outdoor dining and BBQ facilities, surrounded by rows of lavender and oleander shrubs and tangerine, citrus, almond and olive trees all around the villa and rosemary, thyme, mint, sage and basic plants.
