The Loft on Main is a beautifully renovated, spacious, second floor apartment in the heart of downtown Sault Ste. Marie. It includes two bedrooms, fully renovated bathroom and a laundry room with brand new washer and dryer. There is a large, private parking area and a private entrance. The space has been thoughtfully furnished with eclectic, modern decor and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Located within easy walking distance of WMH, restaurants, shops, and nightlife. The space The Loft on Main is located on the second floor of a storied historic downtown building, built at the turn of the 20th century (records indicate construction took place between 1897 and 1902). During it's long life, the main floor of this building has housed several grocery stores, a lunch counter, a wall paper store, a fuel oil company, a coal company, a chainsaw store and several attorneys. The second floor once served as the "Osborn House" hotel. Not without a bit of scandal, in 1915 owner and proprietor of the second floor Osborn House and a grocery store on the first floor, Antonio Raffaele, was threatened by an Italian organized crime group known as the "Black Hand Society". Historic accounts mention threats, dynamite and a black coal handprint left on the door. Fortunately, the dynamite does not seem to have been put to use! I'd like to say it was love at first sight when we originally looked at this vacant building, but it took some time to see the charm. Previous owners had made so many modifications over the years, it was hard to believe the building was over 100 years old. When we start renovating any historic building, we always hope to find some architectural elements remaining from the early days. Sadly, a fire in the building next door about a decade ago, led to tremendous water and smoke damage to the second floor, and any remaining historic elements were destroyed at that point. We have recently completed extensive renovations to the Loft space, with an entirely new bathroom, new flooring, new paint, new light fixtures, some new appliances and all new furniture and furnishings. When we designed the interior, we wanted to create a space that was stylish, but still very comfortable and welcoming. We truly want to give our guests that "home away from home" feeling, where they feel free to put their feet up at the end of the day and relax! If you're planning to visit one of the most historic cities in the country, why not plan to stay in a wonderfully rehabilitated historic building too? If only those old walls could talk..... Guest access Guests will have the apartment all to themselves. Other things to note This apartment is on the second floor, with an exterior, metal grate staircase. It's designed this way to allow for the snow to fall through the stairs and to prevent ice build-up. We had it partially re-built when we bought the building, and the stairs are very safe and completely up to code. However, we occasionally have a guest who isn't fond of the stairs. Please be advised that you will have to climb a set of metal grate stairs to reach the apartment.
