Building History: Built by Alexander and Abigail Herring, in 1818, Harrington’s grandfather, Lord Benjamin Herring, was an English nobleman who settled in the Shenandoah Valley in 1737 and the Thomas House land was part of the original land grant. The best claim to fame of this family is that their daughter, Bathsheba, married Captain Abraham Lincoln and they are the grandparents of President Abraham Lincoln. Through the years, the home served as a hospital during the civil war, and housing for the college. In 1942, the Thomas House became the home of Mr. & Mrs. J. Wilbur Thomas. Lottie Thomas opened the Thomas House bakery, which became the Thomas House restaurant, and operated the house as a boarding house. You can find "Lottie's rules" for boarders, in the 1950s, hanging in the entry way of the Inn.  The rules are a fascinating glimpse into the past life, and will surely provide a little entertainment! Guest access You will be provided a code for accessing the Inn, from Main street. Inside the front door, you'll see the staircase up to your room, and your room key located on the hooks to your left.
