Description

A guest suite downstairs-totally separate from upstairs w/a nice garden outside. You walk down a gravel & brick path to enter @ ground level. It is a large studio w/old growth beams & full length windows, kitchen area, bathroom w/ a jacuzzi tub. There is a Paul Bunyan California King size bed w/ steps, w/no railings. Much room to roam. The outside yard is shared space, yet, we don’t walk in front of your windows and will respect your privacy. There’s a garden & fruit trees to graze in season. The space Right outside the picture windows is a native Sitka spruce tree and to the south a huge loquat tree I’m often potting plants under it. The largest native Sitka spruce grove south of Alaska is located near Caspar, a few miles away. This space is not recommended if you have balance issues as the walkway and brick pathway are uneven, the bed takes two steps to get into and the tub is deep. You will have the complete downstairs of an old growth redwood home. It is a large comfortable studio. Open beams and old growth Redwood abound in this space. It is newly remodeled and comfortable. You’ll have a down comforter on a Paul Bunyan king size bed that has two steps to get into. There is only one bed. Please remove your shoes. I provide indoor slippers....or you may want to bring your own. Please be mindful of your pet & tracking in dirt. They cannot remove their shoes! White carpets, fabric furniture, it’s very hard to keep hair and dander off…cover the love seat should your pet like the couch. It has a furnished kitchen with all necessary pots, pans and dishes. It also has a toaster oven and microwave. It has a farmhouse sink and tile counter with bamboo and black ammomite tones (like the bathroom). The cupboards are made with old growth redwood, much of it uprecycled from our local forest and old growth redwood bridge timbers. I ripped salvaged old growth wood for the cabinets from when I managed an old sawmill. My brother did the remodel. The drawer fronts are a sample of Elm, Chinquipin and Tan Oak from the local forests. It has a coffee maker, electric pot for hot water, French press, stove top espresso maker, blender and cooking staples. There are many cast iron pans in the oven to use as well. There is a complete set of pots, pans and bowls. To enter the bathroom there are up-cycled historic old growth redwood sliding double barn doors, that came from an older building in Ft Bragg. The bathroom has a vessel sink, stream faucet and shower in a jacuzzi tub. There are towels for your use inside and then beach towels on top of the desk area to take to the beach if you desire. Please hang beach towels outside. There is a smart TV, to use with your streaming service and Hulu or Netflix as a guest. Under the TV is an electric fireplace for heating. There’s an additional radiant heater for some who really want to keep the space warm. The electric fireplace heat has been fine for me but I’m not everybody! There is an air purifier (crazy we need one, but the fires have encouraged us!). There’s an oscillating fan (crazy we need one, but the earth is warming!) Our weather would seldom hit 70, a decade ago....now, we have experienced 80s & 90s on occasion. It is the coast; dress appropriately. Layers is always good, or make sure a jacket is in your vehicle; even in summer….especially in summer. The fog rolls in at will! On a high shelf or on top of the fireplace is a Korean made night light, constructed from paper! It is on a timer from dark to a few hours into the night. You can unplug or reset this if you desire yet it is very mild. (Or it may be unset or unplugged by a previous guest.) Made of paper!! You’ll find a “Covid Corner” basket on top of the fireplace also. Wipes, disinfectant spray, hand gel, masks and an information book. Great for common infectious ailments. ..help yourself to extra masks if needed. There is a Lazy boy recliner love seat to watch TV if desired. To lower the footrest, please raise it first all the way, then it will lower with ease. (Ask us how we know—-we found broken parts on the floor! Please don’t force it down…) The rugs are made from New Zealand wool. Fast internet has been installed. Over 200mbps anyway. Outside is a fire pit and many places to sit, relax, read, have a meal and wander. There is a frog pond in the corner, (water level best in winter, drops in summer-best for frogs.) There are fruit trees to pick from in season and a garden to graze. Forgive the working mess, kinda a constant around here. If you use the fire pit only use the wood that is in rounds or limbs. There may be some brush you can break down to help start it as well as paper. I have a lot of old growth redwood around I make things out of. It looks like junk but is not. Do not use that! Please ask if you have any questions. You can stick to branches, limb wood and the wood we provide or you can bring wood. Basically if it looks like hobby wood it is - if it is dimensional in any way it will be up-cycled one day! Just like the wood on the cabinets downstairs...it was once ‘yard wood’! Remember it is the coast. When it’s hot inland, it brings the fog to the coast and can be chilly and damp in the summer months. Bring warm clothes even in summer, layering is best. We get nice warm days when least expected. The outside has continuing work. Bear with me this mess! It is complete otherwise. As you return, you’ll see more and more improvements. I want to make tables to put here and there to enjoy the yard and pond area. We are known on the coast for our rhododendrons, my yard is no exception. Many. I will count soon! Noyo Chief are probably the oldest and over 40 plus years old. There’s a coveted Big Leaf in the driveway. A couple natives and many are 20-30 years old. You’ll find a dawn redwood, weeping Giant Sequoias, weeping Alaskan cedar, weeping Norway spruces….black birch and the oldest trees alive, a Bristle cone pine in the yard. There’s also many fruit trees. Oh! Plus you can see peeks of the ocean... ;-) you’ll certainly hear it! Maybe seals when they are closer ..... If you’d like to leave a window open as sometimes folks like to do, the large slider has a bottom inside safety twist in “ lock” that screws into the door frame - it is mounted to the inside frame. You can leave the slider ajar, around 5” for fresh air. It can also be locked all the way closed this way. Set the ‘lock’; leave the screen door closed & wa-la fresh night air.. From my first guest: (not from this site) Great place to stay! Location is close to Ft Bragg, downtown Mendocino and all the local sites. Zelda is an awesome host and made us feel right at home. Great outdoor space to have a fire or BBQ. Great kitchen if you want to cook. The bed is super comfy and we enjoyed the little electric fireplace! The whole place has a very Zen vibe to remind you to unplug and RELAX! I’ve stayed here twice and I will be back. Great space and great location! Thanks Zelda! From a recent guest: If you are deciding whether or not to book Zelda's place, take this as a sign - BOOK IT NOW! The location is amazing, a few minutes from Mendocino and many great hiking spots. The space is very comfortable, stocked with literally anything you might need. Zelda was incredibly helpful, providing lots of great suggestions for local activities. It's the perfect spot for a zen, restful getaway - I will definitely be back! Guest access Guests have a separate downstairs studio room to themselves. You’ll walk down a gravel and brick pathway to the entrance. Other things to note Please note: currently the oven is not working. There is a toaster oven. Also, the dishwasher does not work. Repairman are several weeks out typically, if not several months We constantly working on the yard! I stay often with my 97 year old father, helping him, so have listed this before it is perfect outside. Come back and you’ll see improvements as we work on it. It’s hard being so far away. (Started caretaking both parents in 2019!) There is an outside area with a fire ring if you’d like a campfire. Please check with me as there is an annual burn ban. There will most likely be wood, you can access the wood ‘shed’ too….you can check yet may have to provide your own. There’s also a nice large yard, always in flux that you can roam around in. There’s a garden, feel free to pick fresh vegetables in season. The yard is still evolving, so you may see things less than perfect. We’re working on the yard and getting there. There’s a small seasonal pond (lower in later summer and fall months-Good for frog habitat). You can cross over the small bridge over the creek and sit in a mellow Zen like area under the Japanese maple tree surrounded by bamboo, a quiet place to meditate. If you are allergic to bees, be cautious there are many in the white birch trees down near the garden. They haven’t bothered us at all as we ignore them and stay a few feet away. With the pandemic many outdoor spaces to eat remained. Now, some are becoming permanent patios with pergola roofs…. Yay! Alas, wearing masks is good if you have a cold or flu, cleaning hands often is great. You’ll find a ‘COVID corner’ basket in the studio. Feel free to use at will and take masks if desired. We are still in a drought. It was really iffy a year or so ago as we were ordered to cut back. We have three huge tanks up the hill and were down to 1 tank….Now, (all filled) with preplanning, we are under instruction to use 143 gallons per day. So please be cognizant of this….you may still take a bath and such, just be mindful in general. 143 gallons is a lot we surmise and most all our plants are on drip irrigation. Please be aware, I made my first and last exception and a recent guest had a cat. (2020) We’ve cleaned well but you may find a hair in the (once covered with a fabric fitted cover) love seat that I’m working on with tweezers. I say this in case you are super allergic to cats. It’s been vacuumed, steam cleaned and sanitized. No one has noticed yet…I haven’t seen a hair in years …. I have a very understanding cancellation policy as I understand life happens; especially caring for my elderly parents. My goal is to ensure a trip is not a huge concern when emergencies happen. I only hope it’s respected as such and not taken advantage of. There is a Ring camera at the driveway for safety. There are no other cameras around or in the studio. (That’s just wrong!) There is an electrical outlet right next to the parking area if a simple plug in is required to charge your car. I am not electric plug-in literate! I just know a couple of cars have been able to use it. Discounts apply after two nights, starting at 10% for three nights, 12% for 4 nights, 13% for 5 nights, 14% for 6 nights and 15% for the week and 20% for two weeks and 30% for the month.
