A working bicentennial farm in the remote wilderness of Pocahontas County, WV. Our farmhouse was built in 1901 and lovingly restored in 2001, is rich with historic woodwork, tin, antiques, and rustic charm, and has been an important part of of our family for 10 generations. Your family will enjoy surprising proximity to WV's best: Snowshoe Mountain, the Greenbriar River Trail, Cass Scenic Railroad, Highland Scenic Highway, the Green Bank National Observatory, Seneca Rocks, and much more. The space June 2022 Update: We've reconstructed our picnic table, replaced the ceiling fan and light in the kitchen, and added new kid things to the parlor closet. Later this year, the entire exterior of the house will be repainted and we hope to add additional electric baseboard heaters for your easy wintertime comfort. May 2021 Update: comfy, new furniture in the parlor and new window shades throughout. (These are not yet reflected in our photos.) We're looking forward to installing many more upgrades for our guests throughout this year! Guest access You'll have access to the full house, very large yard, ungated fields, and old store house where the grill is kept. This is a working farm, so you will not have access beyond the gates into the lower or rear pastures. Other things to note Please note: - This is a cozy, rustic, old house, and we care a lot about it. We want this house remain in our family for 10 more generations, so we humbly request that you follow all the house rules, instructions, and check-out guidelines. Instructions for operating any unusual features (particularly the wood stove and propane heaters) are included in our welcome packet and instruction book at the house. - This is a working farm and home to a great number of pasture-raised, Black Angus cattle. For your safety and the safety of the cattle and our wonderful farmer/neighbor, please do not access the rear of the property (behind the locked gate). If you see the farmer using our driveway or working in the barns and fields in the rear of the property, please be friendly and courteous! - Mobile reception is spotty within 30+ minutes of our farmhouse; however, we offer WiFi for streaming, working, making long distance calls, or finding directions, and a landline for making local or emergency calls. The only internet service available in our part of this rural county is DSL. We have run several devices on it successfully, but it tends to be more affected by bad weather and other service interruptions than what we're used to in less rural areas. - WET WEATHER: Please be mindful of leaving ruts in the yard when you leave the driveway. We respectfully ask that you not pull your car all the way up to the house if the ground is soft. - WINTER: Most rooms are heated by electric baseboards, while a few have wall-mounted propane heaters. When we visit in the winter, we like the cozy, rustic farm feel of heating the house with the wood stove. Please note that fires and propane heaters should be fully extinguished, and doors to the bathrooms should remain closed with the electric heaters set to 50 degrees Fahrenheit when you are off premises. - SUMMER: This house does not feature air conditioning; however, we're lucky to be up in the mountains where temperatures are cooler even in the summer. When we visit the house in the summer, we find it comfortable to live with the screened windows open. - FOR KIDS: We have a pack n play, crib sheets, a portable changing table, toddler plates/bowls/silverware, a bumpo seat, toys, puzzles, and some children's books in the house. More to come in 2022 as our littlest ages out of her baby equipment! - TAXES: AirBnB collects and pays WV state taxes of 6%, which you see as a separate line item. Our nightly rate now includes the additional 6% we pay locally in hotel/occupancy taxes.
