Great area for golf carts to ride around the neighborhood or a trip to our small community beach. Mattapany is a state of mind. Once you have arrived, you can leave your world behind. There is a soulful quality that is immediately experienced and after a few days, you begin to understand why. But you can't quite put your finger on it. Is it the view from the kitchen window seat overlooking Parker's Creek? Is it watching the subtle colors of sunrise over the water from the dock or enjoying a brilliant sunset from the cottage porch? Is the migratory birds, the majestic great blue herons or bald eagles that grace you with their presence, if you are quiet and still long enough? It probably has something to do with spending time with family and friends - unplugging and playing board games, swinging on the tree swings or hammock, crabbing off the dock, using the HUGE lily pad in the creek, picking vegetables from the garden for dinner, making meals together and eating at long tables on the porch when conversations go into the wee hours of the night. And then you make a campfire in the back yard to keep the conversation going while stargazing, eating smores' or roasting Oysters. "Mattapany" translates to "the meeting of waters"; and our property sits on the original native land called Occohannock. The main house has a history that goes back 400 years, one of the first land grants in the area. We are sentimental about things in the house; the furniture, lamps, paintings and even the classic wallpaper. There are memories built into the bones of the houses and out buildings. Our grandparents bought the house in 1949. Our grandfather published articles about farm life while our grandmother gardened and canned for the winter. My aunts, who lived in the cottage, walked the long clamshell driveway twice a day for 20 years. My siblings and our respective families have our own deep memories and are building new ones with our children and grandchildren. We are excited to share this cherished piece of earth with our guests. Your love will be embedded here along side that of our ancestors. We are so grateful and look forward to hearing about your adventures. Guest access When your stay nears, our Caretaker Captain Pat will reach out to you with checkin instructions and answer any questions you may have. Captain Pat is very knowledgable of local waters and can assist you with fishing hot spots, locating ancient arrowheads, local favorite restaurants, places to explore and much more.
