This 3-bedroom Mid-Century home is pet-free, non-smoking and open only to guests age 13 and older. It is 3 blocks north of Earlham College, 3.7 miles from Reid Hospital-IU East and 2.5 miles from the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Built in 1958, it sleeps up to 5. It has a gas fireplace, deep soaking tub, laundry facilities and one-level interior. Across the street are a wooded park with rentable shelters, playground and basketball court. Our goal is to provide comfortable, clean, well-equipped accommodations that feel welcoming — like home without the clutter — at a fair price. The living room features a queen sleeper sofa, an adjustable coffee table, two side chairs, side tables, and a Samsung Smart TV that has free YouTube TV live programming (equivalent to cable, with local channels, HBO, Showtime and ESPN/sports channels) as well as a variety of apps you can use to log into your own streaming accounts (and please remember to log out!). Also in the living room is a lovely gas fireplace, but the freestanding screen in front of the gas fireplace opening is the reason this property is not suitable for children age 12 and under, who could topple or move the screen, or reach into the opening to play with the gas log set. The fully equipped kitchen has the original boomerang-patterned Formica countertop, the original (refurbished) electric stove top, a wall oven, full-sized refrigerator and dishwasher. Small appliances include a microwave, Keurig coffeemaker and toaster (other appliances available on request). We also provide assorted K-cups, tea bags, sweeteners and creamers, and a small bowl of assorted Dove chocolates. There is one full bathroom, with tub-shower unit that has a deep soaking tub, and we provide Dr. Teal’s Epsom salts for guests’ use. Since there is only one bathroom, please keep in mind that, for larger groups, you may need to work out a shower/bath schedule. The unit also has a washer and dryer. The master bedroom has a queen bed, dresser, large closet, small manual recliner, desk, desk chair, electric fireplace and Fire TV that guests can use to access their own accounts on streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix or Hulu. The next-largest bedroom has two twin beds. That bedroom also has a large closet, small sitting area, small electric fireplace, a library of books for your use during your stay, a desk, and a comfortable desk chair. The smallest bedroom has one twin bed, a dresser, a medium-size closet and a bookcase, but no desk. For health reasons during COVID, we switched over to microfiber bedsheets, which also are hypoallergenic, bedbug-resistant, stain-resistant and temperature-regulating. You will have the whole place to yourselves except for a storage room that is locked off with a door marked “Private.” The neighborhood This place is in a residential neighborhood set back from the main roads. It is across the street from Mary Scott Park, a wooded city park that has rentable shelters, playground equipment and a basketball court. About a block away is a middle school, where you may notice more activity than normal around 8 am and 3 pm, as students arrive at and depart from school. In the afternoon, cars can start lining the streets as early as 2:30 pm. The house is six blocks away from the Cordell Municipal Pool, which is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. It also is within walking distance of downtown and the trendy Depot District. You will have access to the entire home, carport and front yard. We live in a nearby home, so you will likely see us coming and going from our back yard or garage, or going in to clean our other Airbnbs in the home next to this one. We always enjoy meeting our guests, so we usually say hello if we see you — but we also understand that you may prefer privacy. Please feel free to respond as you wish — say hello back, or wave us off and otherwise ignore us! We won’t take offense. We’re always available, however, whether you want restaurant recommendations, you want to use of one of our crock pots or other optional items, or you need us to address any concerns or problems. Richmond's quiet west side was settled by Quakers who founded nearby Earlham College (three blocks to the south) in 1847. Some of the original Quaker homes include the beautiful Mendenhall brick home three doors south of this location, the Dennis house on the south side of the block on West Main, and the Peacock home on Peacock Road a block and a half to the north). These homes are nestled among the World War I-era homes to the east, the "kit" bungalows on nearby Bungalow Hill (where we live) and sprawling, post-World War II developments immediately to the west. Just across the street is a lovely, wooded city park (Mary Scott Park) that’s great for walking, but also has picnic tables, grills, a covered shelter, swings, a playground and a cabin that can be rented for events through the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. Adjacent to the park is a basketball court, and about seven blocks away is the Corky Cordell Municipal Pool (do a browser search to see current hours and a complete description), open during the summer with a very affordable daily admission fee — ask to use our beach towels! Within a few minutes' walk, guests will find a full-service grocery store (Needler's) as well as numerous small restaurants, from Mancino's (grinders and pizzas) and the westside Pizza King (a regional chain) to chains like Arby's and Domino's, to the Speedy Cafe inside the Speedway gas station’s convenience store. It’s also a short walk to Earlham College's Wellness Center, which offers day passes for a fee. Within a few blocks’ walk you also will find two convenience stores (including the store at the Speedway gas station, which offers fresh sandwiches and other food items through its Speedy Cafe), a full-service salon (Fifth & Mane) and an wonderful, old-fashioned hardware store (Mendenhall’s) where you can find whatever size screw, nut, bolt or washer you need, as well as great prices on candy bars! A little further away (still walkable), you will find popular locally owned restaurants and other businesses in both historic Old Richmond and the thriving, trendy Depot District. In Old Richmond, you will find the Old Richmond Inn (fine dining, open for lunch and dinner), 5th Street Coffee & Bagels (open for breakfast and lunch), Cosmotique Salon, and Therapeutic Solutions (a therapeutic massage studio). In the Depot District, Look for Little Sheba’s (best known for sandwiches with quirky names, as well as salads, spaghetti, and gigantic brownies), Roscoe’s Coffee Bar and Tap Room, The Firehouse BBQ and Blues, The Cordial Cork (a wine bar with a limited menu), The Italian Market, Gigglebox Sweets Bakery, The Art of Hair Salon, Two Sisters Bookstore, Richmond Furniture Outlet and many other unique small shops. To the north on NW Fifth Street is Clara’s Pizza King, which features a double-decker bus outfitted with tables. A somewhat longer walk or short drive away to the west on National Road are Great Wall (Chinese food, takeout only), Sunshine Cafe (which you could call a greasy spoon), El Bronco (Mexican food, obviously), Subway, Dairy Queen, Burger King, CVS and several stores in the small strip mall where Great Wall is located. AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION: We recommend you call Susie’s Shuttle Service at 765-400-0749. Airport transportation is also provided by area taxicab companies. AROUND TOWN: Rose View Transit buses stop at several locations within a block of this location. As of June 2020, the regular bus fare was $1.75 and the rate for students, seniors and people with disabilities was $1.50. Other public transportation options include local cab companies, Uber and Lyft. Richmond also has dedicated bike lanes throughout the downtown area, as well as the Cardinal Greenway, a rails-to-trails conversion. We ask that you and your guests avoid putting anything down the toilet other than the toilet paper we provide and whatever comes out of you. No feminine products. No “flushable” wipes. Because this an older home, the insides of the pipes have mineral deposits that can snag things other than toilet paper and waste, eventually creating blockages that cause messy, smelly backups (bad for you) and costly plumbing bills (bad for us). If you need more toilet paper, please request it (we use a brand that is known to be easy on old pipes). As noted in our description of the space, we do not allow children under age 13 to stay here under any circumstances because of safety concerns surrounding the fireplace. This place has a Keurig coffeemaker that allows you to brew either single cups or large carafes (since that may be more convenient for larger groups). We furnish an instruction card, complete with diagrams, that walks you through the steps of making either. If you are not familiar with this type of Keurig, we highly recommend that you read the instructions before you try to make coffee, or ask us to show you how it works.
