During the summer at Steinhatchee, scalloping takes center stage. The Steinhatchee area is known as 'Florida's Scallop Capital,' as the Gulf waters make an ideal habitat for these delicious shellfish. Scalloping season typically opens late June and ends mid-September each year. Other popular recreational opportunities in the area include bird watching, hiking, hunting, canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, cave diving, nature photography, and visiting the many state parks in the area. Boat rentals and charters are available through the local marinas. Car, bike or walk is the best way to get around.
