203 - The Library at City Hall Grand
Preserved Old City Hall is a historic city landmark with a lot of old stories to tell. Eber Culver, one of Williamsport’s foremost architects, designed the five-story building of yellow brick trimmed in stone with molded brick ornamentation and terra cotta columns. Built in 1893, it features two towers: a large rectangular tower and a smaller octagonal tower, both of which have been incorporated into the hotel’s unique design. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Pla The space Lumber baron and philanthropist James VanDuzee Brown had dreamed for years of giving the city a free, public library, an idea which was suggested by his late wife, Carile Brown. In his will, Brown bequeathed $400,000 to the city, and stipulated that $150,000 be used to erect and endow a public library at the corner of Fourth and State Streets. The James V. Brown Library opened its doors in June 1907. City Hall Grand Hotel would like to thank the library for allowing us to borrow and restore the many pictures seen in our hotel.
