Description

Our quirky cabin is for you if you love mountain views, outdoor fires, open meadows, and cute small towns. The space The cabin is quirky--the previous owner enclosed an RV inside a wooden frame and added an extra room. The situation now is that you enter a wood paneled cabin--a large room we use as the dining and living room areas. There is a door off this room which leads into the RV portion of the cabin, which provides the bathroom, kitchen, one bedroom, and a second sleeping area. The cabin is rustic. You will see insects and the occasional critter inside and out. You cannot keep food out in the kitchen or you will have mice. Most guests enjoy the cabin as much as we do but if you are someone who does not feel comfortable with the occasional mouse sighting or spider web this stay is not for you. If you are the kind of person who finds this amusing, or just appreciates the reuse of resources, please come check it out! You'll need to turn on the water and gas when you get there, and take off the protective covers from the beds (we rarely see mice but we know they're there when the cabin is empty). It's not hard, just note that that's part of the experience. This is a place for someone who loves nature and the outdoors. The interior of the cabin is quite pleasant but the real joy of being there is the outside. We have a fire pit right out front and a table for eating. There are two swings in a maple tree, an outdoor eating table and chairs, and lots of Adirondack chairs. The whole place smells like the wild thyme growing in the meadow. There's a second eating/fire pit area at the top of a hill on the property with a really amazing view. Some people camp up there when they visit us. We keep a picnic table there and more Adirondack chairs. Here's where you can sleep: --The private RV bedroom with a sliding door and a queen bed. --Two beds in what used to be the living room of the RV. One of the beds is an alcove and not a full-length bed, nor a full mattress, but kids love it. This area is located in the kitchen and one of the beds has access to the living room--you can climb across it to get to the couch. Again, kids love this--sometimes it's like having a "back seat" for the couch during game nights in the living room. --A couch in living room. --2 folding canvas cots in the living room --A shed out back that's painted a cheery yellow, with a double bed with a proper mattress and some electricity. You have to enter the cabin to use the bathroom - sleeping out there is kind of like sleeping in a tent. We ask an extra $10 to make up this space as it's extra work for our cleaner. --A 10'x12' "Tentr" style platform tent with a double bed and possible single bed as well. We ask an extra $10 to make up this space as it's extra work for our cleaner. --Any tents you want to pitch! Dogs okay (no cats please) but we'll ask you to cover an additional $20 to accommodate extra cleaning. Guest access You'll have access to the full space. Other things to note If you book, please have the House Manual open on your phone (or print it) before you get to the cabin. There's very little cell service up there and the manual explains how to find the key and get in. It also tells you how to get on the Wifi, and lists some things to do in the area. Things to do in Middleburgh • Buy honey, jam and maple syrup from our neighbors – they keep all of it in a cooler on their front porch – honor system. You’ll see the house when you first arrive. When the road turns right, just after you pass the Vlaie, you’ll see a log cabin type building. • Hike Vroman’s nose – short hike, great views • New ice cream shop in town - "Ice-burg" -  across from the Middleburgh Diner on the way into town, with great views of Vroman's Nose. If you like bass fishing, that is the season opening. • Downtown Middleburgh: used book store, Conglomerate (gift shop, public library, The Green Wolf, microbrew pub, Hubie's (good pizza and Italian), Middleburgh Diner (great standby), new coffee shop near hardware with delicious baked items • Pick apples at Terrace Orchards in Schoharie • Buy fruits and veggies at Barber’s Farmstand – they make their own vodka • Trail ride at Goss’s Hosses (for people with good riding experience) • Swimming holes in area (our favorite: from downtown Middleburgh, turn left on Rte 30 South toward Fultonham. Pass Shaul Farms on the right after several miles, then you’ll see a pubic picnic area on the right. Pass that, and park on the right side of the road where the guardrail ends – head into the woods and you’ll see river access with good swimming. • Swimming hole 2: Center of the Town of Medusa. Less room to swim but great for sitting in a waterfall or taking a stream hike.  • Swimming hole 3: West Berne - Take Cotton Hill Road from Middleburgh to West Berne. Just before you get into the bridge, the road turns right. There is a little parking area next to someone's RV campsite. You can walk in to the stream there and find a very large body of water and a lot of waterfalls. • Swimming hole 4: Burtonvillle - another longer drive, but worth it. There is a parking lot by the bridge in the center of town. Take the path from the lot to the rivers. Huge holes, great falls, cliffs, great fishing. • If raining – drive to Cobleskill to the Park Cinemas. $5 movie tickets include popcorn. • Greenville Drive In is the best - they bring warm fresh baked cookies to your car as your social distance watch movies. • Drive to Cooperstown for the day or to glimmerglass opera • Middleburgh winery • Go bowling and do your laundry in one location at the downtown Middleburg lanes. • Winter fun at Bearpen Mountain (curling, snow fat biking, tube sledding, x-country skiing) • X-country skiing at Mountain Trails • Disc golf at Minekill State Park • Snow skiing at Wyndham, Bellaire, Hunter, Plattekill (45 min drive)
