The space The Barkley House is a modest, but light-filled & cozy 2 bedroom/2 bath home that is decorated and well-appointed for comfort and relaxing! Large windows throughout the home help bring the outside in and views of Mt. Baker, the Twin Sisters and Bellingham Bay can be seen from almost every area of the house! Wake up early and catch the sunrise from your private deck or fire up the grill for dinner and enjoy a meal & a glass of wine while the bistro lights twinkle overhead and Mt. Baker provides the most incredible backdrop! The main living area has two sitting areas as well as a Craftsman style desk and work space. Have a seat and work on your next novel or send a postcard home! Binoculars are available for bird watching or orca spotting in the bay. Board games, puzzles, books and DVDs are there for guests to enjoy on those PNW rainy days! The kitchen has everything guests need for prepping and cooking a delicious meal at home, or make use of the pizza stone for an easy pizza dinner! This house does not come equipped with a dishwasher, but the views out the 2 kitchen windows by the sink will more than make up for it while you hand wash! The dining area is off the kitchen and has another sitting area as well. A fully stocked mudroom/laundry area is right off the kitchen and is the main entrance for guests to use into the home. You will find a washer/dryer, iron and ironing board. Cold bags for shopping and making the return trip to the island are there for guests to use as well. The 2 bedrooms are located at the back of the home. The primary bedroom has a new queen-size hybrid Leesa mattress & a Craftsman style bed & dressers. The primary bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with a tub, lots of closet space, and heated floors. The second bedroom has a new full-size Nectar mattress on a platform bed. A built in dresser, closet, and a bookshelf filled with local and well-known authors complete this room. There is also access to the second bathroom with a shower. There are charging stations in both bedrooms. There are a few walking paths around the property. Please enjoy the surroundings carefully. We have a few resident deer who are very curious! The property is filled with wild ferns and other plants that are native to the PNW. We hope you enjoy the beauty of the natural areas as much as we do! A Townie Step-Thru bike is available for guests to use during their stay. She does best down on the lowlands, but people bike all over the island! Have fun exploring. Guest access Guests will have access to the entire house. Lummi Island is remote and the Barkley House is up in the mountains! Please be up for the adventure! Once you arrive, you can pull slightly up the hill & above the home to park or you can park in the grassy area and walk up to the house. You can pull straight in but due to the narrow drive there is no where to turn around and you will need to be able to back out. You may park where you feel comfortable - just not in front of our neighbors house! Follow the stepping stones to the right of the driveway and up the ramp to the covered porch. The keypad entry is located on that door and your keyless access code will be sent to you before arrival for self check-in. Other things to note Part of what makes the Barkley House so special is the private location. Just a few of our neighbor's homes are partially visible from our location. However, since the house is tucked back from the road and built into the hillside, please give extra care when walking around the paths on the property or nearing any edges of the hill. It is steep and a long tumble down to the road! The same is true for the narrow driveway up to the house; please give extra time & care to entering and exiting the drive. Also, during the famous PNW rains, the deck gets very slippery when wet. Please use the handrails! House Quirks - This is an older house with lots of quirks, but we love it. Thanks for being patient with it as we continue to make it even more comfortable for your stay! 1. The light switches to turn on the outside bistro lights as well as the dining room light, are located to the right of the sliding doors in a cut out in the rock fireplace. 2. If something isn’t working, double check that the item is plugged in. We unplug everything between guests as a safety issue and sometimes something gets missed! **There are no grocery stores or gas stations on the island. The Islander will do in a pinch, but make sure you shop and fill up before you arrive!** Please check out our guidebooks under the owner profile for picking up essentials before you head to the island! Please check the latest ferry schedule online for any updates and outages at the Whatcom County Ferry Schedule for Lummi Island. Lastly, we are so glad you are here!
