Lopez Island is the gateway to B.C. and Vancouver Island. Enjoy spectacular 180° views of neighboring islands. The surrounding area is filled with unlimited recreational opportunities. Whether you come for a few nights in the off-season or a week or more in summer, this will be a perfect location to enjoy water and land recreation and the natural beauty of the San Juan Islands and Salish Sea, explore the history and culture of the area, or just relax and whale watch from the deck. Nicknamed “the Friendly Isle,” 15-mile-long Lopez Island's landscape includes both forests and farmlands. Its 63 miles of coastline include bays and beaches to explore at nearby parks. Cycling, hiking, golf, kayaking, whale watching, fishing, and of course boating are all popular activities here. Lopez Village has shops, galleries, eateries, grocery stores, and historical sites to visit. The nearby islands of San Juan/Friday Harbor and Orcas Island offer more recreational, site-seeing, and dining opportunities. Crabbing is excellent in Shoal Bay and is some of the best in the islands; a Washington State crabbing license is required. Although clamming on the property/beach is prohibited and under environmental protection, there is a shellfish farm (URL HIDDEN) just minutes from the house, offering a variety of clams, oysters and mussels, along with fresh salmon, halibut and cod caught daily. Clamming is allowed with proper licensing at Odlin County Park (within walking distance from the house) and Spencer Spit State Park (approx. a 5 minute drive from the house). Here are more activity ideas from the Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce: * Rent a bike (see rental links below) or bring your own for exploring the rolling countryside and open farmland of Lopez. * See the seals & sea lions at Shark Reef Sanctuary after walking in on the beautiful wooded trail. * See tide pools and climb the rock at low tide when you visit Agate Beach County Park. * Visit the picturesque Center Church and the Lopez Cemetery. * Play a round of golf at the Lopez Golf Club. * Rent a kayak (see rental links below) or bring your own and paddle in protected Fisherman Bay or explore the more dramatic shoreline of the island.
