As one can already see from a distance and as promised by the tourist guides, the White City which is 300 metres above sea level, rises illuminated by sunlight in all its splendour and has the silhouette of a Kasbah. If before arriving there, one stops at Marina di Ostuni, one will find a residence with a virtual connection with the East: the Porta D’Oriente Suite. Extensive restructuring and renovation have been necessary to transform an old storage building belonging to a masseria on the sea front into a home full of charm and fascination. In the very first phase of refurbishment, it was thought of naming the holiday apartment Mare di Stelle (sea of stars), because of its closeness to the rocks and the stars that shine on the sea. However, in accordance with the predominant style of the apartment, which is very close to the beach, the name Porta D’Oriente (gateway to the East) was chosen. Eastern Mediterranean, rustic, unique. Although the apartment was designed in an Oriental style, the Porta D’Oriente Suite(referring to the geographical position of Puglia) undoubtedly represents a successful and interesting fusion of cultures. The individually designed gate is flanked by two massive columns that merge into two white domes of stone that remind one of faraway mosques, to the side an Indian Fig plant has found its ideal home. The external area (terrace) of the apartment is enclosed by a dry-stone wall of warm shades of sand and terracotta, and is characteristic of both Puglia and Arab countries and emits a warm welcome. Once cannot fail to notice the façade of the building at the centre of which there is an arched green doorway, designed by craftsmen, that beckons one to enter. The oval shaped windows are framed in an original way by different shaped stones. A long stone white bench adorned with oriental cushions invites one to listen to the roar of the sea, possibly accompanied by a nice glass of Puglia wine. From its elevated position one can also enjoy a side view of the sea, from the front part of the building there is direct access to the sea (a sandy bay). On the grass terrace, there are some wooden seats that lend themselves to romantic candlelit meals. The spotlights embedded into the dry stone wall and into the bench as well as a line of windproof lanterns make the external area of the property unique and welcoming. The recently renovated Porta D’Oriente apartment is suitable for two people. The apartment has a fan system and can therefore also be used in the autumn and winter. The property owners have decorated the home with much passion and attention to detail. Valuable materials have been used like travertine marble and other natural stone, such as for example Jerusalem stone which is characterised by a particular tonality of sand and yellow. Other ideas and concepts of design such as an arabesque style double bed show that the owners are lovers of interior design. At the head of the bed, Persian majolica ceramics attract ones attention. Intricate latticed ceiling lights have a charming effect and are a classic of Moroccan craftsmanship. The stone worktop in the kitchen is covered with a beautiful layer of yellow travertine. The saffron coloured walls also add to the harmony of the surroundings. If one decides to eat inside, there are also two colonial style stools. The kitchen area (inside the room) is well equipped with a ceramic hob, oven, fridge-freezer, glasses, crockery and many kitchen utensils. On their travels, the family that own the property have acquired Eastern influenced decorative elements. The North African mirror has a very elaborate design, pictures as well as other accessories were found for example in London, the two antique prints were found at an antique market in Tuscany. Even the cushions for outside were specifically brought to Ostuni. Other things have been simply added. Instead of a traditional wardrobe, one finds an ivory coloured baldachin covered by an orange curtain (in the niche there are made-to-measure shelves to keep clothes). To maintain the rustic style of the apartment a special uneven plaster has been used. A passage to the bathroom is reached through a white sliding door. Also here, for example in the shower (with glass door), small travertine mosaic tiles have been preferred to standard tiles. For the stone counter top the owners have chosen a wash basin, also made of travertine. There are luxury taps, a large mirror and a stone floor, which add to the refinement of the bathroom. Porta D’Oriente is pleasing for its personal atmosphere. It has a safe built into the wall, and iron for the use of its guests. There is a parking space inside the courtyard. The Porta D’Oriente apartment, on the ground floor, is slightly lower compared to the adjacent apartment with a patio. Villanova, the ancient fishing harbour and the neighbouring village of Camerini where one finds the apartment on a spit of land that stretches out to the sea, have maintained their original character. Here one can still watch fishermen with their boats going out to sea and on returning beating their octopuses on the rocks so that they can be prepared to be cooked.
