The Bird-Baldwin House has a rich, southern history. Built by Lewis Bird in 1838, it is the oldest home in Savannah South of Liberty Street. Bird, a prominent Savannah attorney, began the construct but tragically perished with his entire family on the Steamboat Pulaski when it exploded and sank off the coast of North Carolina on June 14, 1838. Bird's mother completed the house and sold it to his law partner, Mr. Baldwin, who lived in it for many years. The house was commandeered and occupied by General Sherman’s staff as a temporary headquarters in December 1864, after Sherman’s infamous March to the Sea. The Bird-Baldwin House survived many subsequent transformations, including time as a boarding house and tavern known as “Harry’s Place,” before finally being restored and renovated.
