The House of Machrie is a substantial Victorian country house on the Isle of Arran. It is set in beautiful surroundings with fabulous coastal views across the Kilbrannan Sound to the Mull of Kintyre. Built over 100 years ago as the principal farmhouse on the island it encapsulates Scottish architecture through the ages with crow stepped roof gables and a circular tower, which houses the main staircase. It is surrounded by mature trees and overlooks its former kitchen garden and farmland. The space The house was extensively modernised and refurbished to a high standard in April 2019. and is now a modern sporting lodge on the Dougarie Estate accommodating 14 guests in 3 double rooms with en-suite bathrooms, 2 twin bedded rooms with en-suite shower rooms and 2 twin bedded rooms that share a bathroom. All twin bedded rooms can be configured as doubles if required. The house combines spacious and attractive bedrooms with lots of public space including an elegant drawing room, dining room, a family/TV/sitting room, a large fully fitted and equipped kitchen and a sea-facing conservatory. There is central heating throughout, with underfloor heating in the bathrooms, boot room, conservatory and kitchen and the house has fast wi-fi throughout. Outside there is a stone barn that has been converted into a games room and is a perfect space for games on a wet day. Domestic help can be arranged on a daily basis and is provided with full sporting packages. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the boot room and conservatory, we do however take a higher level of damages deposit from those bringing dogs in case of any eventualities. This is fully refundable after your stay. Deliveries can be made to a rented house for incoming tenants. There is a cash machine and Off Licence. On a Roll Take away café serving fresh hot and cold food and drinks. Using lots of local produce. The Arran Butcher (01770 860354) There is a large selection of meat including locally home grown lamb. Fish is also available from Wednesdays. The Mckinnon family also own the butcher’ shop at Lochranza. The Harbour Shop (01770 860215) Newspapers and magazines are available and can be ordered. There is something for everyone in this shop – cards, postcards, toys and a selection of gifts and even DIY items. The Blackwaterfoot Bakehouse (close to the Kinloch Hotel) (01770 860444) Artisan bakehouse with continental bread and pastries. The Shiskine Golf Course tearoom (01770 860548) Large tearoom serving snacks and meals. Outside seating available. The Kinloch Hotel (01770 860444) Restaurant and public bars. Free wifi. Petrol can be purchased at the Blackwaterfoot garage (01770 860277) Machrie Old Byre Visitor Centre (01770 840608) A shop selling sheepskins, bags, clothes and much more with a large outside play and activity area for both young and old. The Café Thyme is also at the centre serving fresh baked pides (Turkish pizza) and with a good menu to choose from. The Machrie Bay tearoom (01770 840329) Next to the golf course, serving snacks and meals, along with drinks and ice cream. Pirnmill & Catacol Village shop and Post Office. (01770 850235) Shop is well stocked. The specialities are local farm eggs and locally baked rolls. There are cash withdrawal facilities, newspapers and an off licence. Firewood can also be bought here. The Lighthouse (01770 850240) Eat in or take out. Lochranza Stags Restaurant (01770 830600) Need to book. Great food. BYOB The Arran Distillery (01770 830334) Distillery, shop, whisky tasting and tours. Large café The Lochranza Hotel (01770 830223) Bar and restaurant open to the public. The Sandwich Station (07810796248) Tiny takeaway opposite the ferry car park. Made to order food and uses lots of local produce.
