The old growth forest is over 122 acres, but the Hearts Content scenic area is most famous for its 20 acres of tall white pine and eastern hemlock. Many of those trees have diameters of over 40 inches and heights of over 140 feet. The white pine are between 300 and 400 years old. The 20 acres were owned by Wheeler and Dusenbury Lumber Company from 1897 to 1922. Wheeler and Dusenbury then deeded the land to the U.S. Forest Service in 1923. Hearts Content is designated as a National Natural Landmark. This forest is a part of the historic homelands of the Munsee Lenape people(s).
