Beautiful, couple's getaway with amazing views.
Description
Our sympathetically converted barn is home to this lovely one-bedroom gîte. The original fabric of the building: big beams, old stonework, is very much on show, plus there's so much to see out of the window! You have a balcony view of Mt Canigou, as well as a lovely dining area for relaxed breakfasts and sundowner cocktails. Our little village is quiet and peaceful, yet only 15 minutes from the town of Prades, with its shops and famous market. And all around, we have the incredible Pyrenees The space We make no secrets that Une Hirondelle is our favourite of the three gîtes. It's a perfect size for a couple, with its old iron bed in a large, airy bedroom, French windows that look onto Canigou in one direction and north facing window that shows the morning sun lighting up the hills opposite. (Please note, there's a wooden spiral staircase, so it's not ideal for those with mobility issues, or large suitcases!) Downstairs, there's a light and airy living room, with comfy sofa and chair, as well as a dining table. The kitchen is well-equipped with a gas hob and microwave, plus all of the utensils and crockery you might need. All sheets and towels are provided. Right outside the sliding doors is your outdoor area, which gets the sun nearly all day. It's ideal for breakfast and coffee right before a big day out in the hills, reading a book under a sun shade, having a snooze, or to toast Mount Canigou as the setting sun lights it up in the evening. Guest access Your gîte sits at the end of our gravel courtyard and a grassy lane from there leads deep into the fields and wooded hills that surround our village. Or head across the village lane and explore the old road, with the ancient church, the restored stone village lavoire (public laundry from the era before washing machines) and boules court. A short walk brings you to the village café (which should be open for the summer by the time you read this). Or, instead, go 2km south to Sahorre and you'll be at our other favourite restaurant. The small town of Vernet Les Bains is a short distance over the ridge and the big town of Prades, with its famous Tuesday market is only a 15 minute drive away! There are many things to see and do here in Fuilla. Take a ride on Le Petit Train Jaune up into the mountains, catch a bus or train for a day in Perpignan, visit the walled medieval town of Villefranche de Conflent at the bottom of the hill, visit the astounding caves of Les Grottes de Canalettes while you're there as well (it's always a cool 14C there - ideal on a summer's day...) We have a guest laundry room with washing machine, along with boules, games and books for the occasional rainy day or rest day off the bikes or boots. Talking of which, we do have secure bike storage and basic pumps and tools to help you fix your machines. Other things to note We are Beate and Chipps, a German/British and British/British couple, who bought Les Hirondelles in 2022. The previous owners, Mike and Penny, had bought it as an old barn and farmhouse in the early 2000s and had the vision to renovate it into a house with three, beautiful, self-catering gîtes. After running them successfully for 15 years, they've retired locally and we've taken on their legacy. We moved here as we love the mountains and we love riding our bikes here (and walking our dog, Jess, too). We can't wait to point you towards all of the great road, trails and cafés that we're continuing to discover. We're doing our best to keep up with all of the complicated opening hours, improving our French and just loving waking up here every day. We hope you will too.
