As guests in "the Boat House" you share the 5-acre property with "the Bay House", which is our full-time residence (though sometimes rented when we travel ). If we are on the island when you arrive we may greet you at your dock and help you with your things, but it's generally "contactless check-in"--- simply make yourselves at home. We'll be on call to provide whatever assistance you might need during your stay. Little Gasparilla Island is definitely not a crowded tourist destination. In fact you aren't likely to see more than a handful of people on the beach during your stay. It is a "pre-Disney", all-natural kind of place for folks serious about vacation (if you're ready to unplug and explore what natural Florida has to offer, this is the spot for you). Whether you are honeymooning, reuniting with old friends, or taking a business retreat, we have the set up you need. Our two guest houses (the Boat House and the currently unavailable Beach Cottage) and the Bay House (our main residence, available when we are traveling for extended periods) are three distinct properties that can be rented individually or as a unit. They each maintain total privacy, but larger groups (up to a total of 16) who rent all three houses will enjoy their close proximity and shared amenities. Sarasota, Ft. Myers, and Tampa airports are all great options. The most usual way to get to the marina from any airport is to rent a car. An alternative is to hire a car/driver for both your arrival and departure. Both options are pretty straightforward. If you are planning to utilize the local water taxi rather than bringing or renting a boat, the water taxi will pick you up from Eldred's Marina: 6301 Boca Grande Causeway, Placida, Florida You can obtain a parking pass at Eldred's Marina for $6/day. The local water taxi is Pirates Water Taxi in Placida. We suggest booking your arrival and departure as far in advance as possible to ensure that you aren't stuck waiting with cold groceries or when you need to catch a flight home! For those guests interested in reserving a boat we typically recommend John and Kelly's Boat Rentals, Allure Boat Rentals, or Gasparilla Marina Boat Rentals . There are also several tour companies in the area if you are simply interested in having someone show you around the local waters. A golf cart is not at all necessary for your stay on the island, but you may want to rent one from Island Golf Carts to explore the winding sand pathways in the interior of the island (do not drive golf carts on the beach, stay on the pathways, and do not park in anyone's yard.) Little Gasparilla Island is a bridge-less barrier island with no cars, stores or restaurants of any kind. It is only accessible by the local water taxi, or by personal or rented boat. This makes for a very private and quiet vacation, but it does require a little more planning. We suggest making your grocery list and ordering ahead of time from a Englewood or Placida grocery store for pick up when you arrive. There is plenty of room on the water taxi for all your belongings and groceries. If you like you can even hire Island Grocery Delivery to pick it up for you at Publix (Cape Haze) or WalMart (Englewood) --- they will put it in the house for your checkin time. You'll dock (or be dropped off by the water taxi) at Dock #2, which is right outside your front door. Dock carts will be waiting near the base of the dock if you'd like to use them to transport your things from the boat to the house (about 75 feet, NO STAIRS!). We live on and love this beautiful island but won’t stick around in the event of a hurricane or Red Tide--and we don’t expect you to either! So, regardless of normal cancellation policies, if hurricane or Red Tide warnings cause you to cancel some or all your stay, we will refund any payments otherwise due to us for the unused portion.
