A quiet private house with a small skateable garden, one hour from Kyoto and near Lake Biwa. The handmade concrete landscape can be skated or enjoyed as sculpture. Surrounded by rice fields, with birds, wind, and clear starry nights. Renovated by the host, a Japanese painter, into a simple teahouse-like space. Ideal for writers, artists, and anyone seeking stillness. Two nights or more recommended. Not a place to consume, but to pause and reconnect with your senses. The space A tokonoma with striking design An old study desk A traditional earthen-floored kitchen An antique single-seater sofa and rocking chair placed on the engawa Traditional Japanese earthen walls A guesthouse-style café that continues to evolve (and deepen), where the owner—a Japanese painter—is gradually renovating the space himself to give the tea room a modern makeover Bedding is made from natural materials (excluding mattresses and blankets) Comforter: down; mattress: wool; buckwheat hull pillow Organic cotton & hemp sheets Children are welcome to stay with peace of mind The Japanese-style building features two connected rooms: a 6-tatami-mat room with reclaimed wood flooring and a 4.5-tatami-mat room with traditional tatami mats The bathhouse is a separate concrete structure that we renovated ourselves. In the garden, we are gradually building a small DIY skate park that resembles a slippery landscape. Lake Biwa, water from the rice paddies, accumulated snow. The concrete in the garden forms circular patterns reminiscent of surface tension. The design was inspired by “water” itself—a symbol of Japanese culture. Other things to note Environmental Considerations * To reduce waste, we do not provide disposable toothbrushes. We do sell environmentally friendly toothbrushes, such as domestically made bamboo toothbrushes and BPA-free options, but we kindly ask that you bring your own whenever possible. * The laundry detergent we provide is a powdered soap chosen with consideration for the water quality of Lake Biwa. Our fabric softener is handmade and free from carcinogenic ingredients. * Our café menu mainly consists of coffee and other beverages. Getting Around * As we are located in a rural area, we recommend renting a car. Rental cars are available near Makino Station. * Two rental bicycles are available. * ¥1,000 per bicycle / day Café & Local Food Menu If ordered at least 3 days before your stay, we can prepare a selection of local food and drinks, including: * Happy Taro doburoku (traditional unfiltered sake) * Local craft beer from Omi Brewery * Bento boxes, sweets, and other items from Okome Shokudo Nagomi * Our own hand-roasted coffee made from pesticide-free Ethiopian beans * Local sake from Takashima * Funazushi from Uoji, including their traditional aemono-style preparation * Homemade bread made with Japanese wheat * And more Please contact us in advance if you would like any of these items. BBQ & Cooking Equipment * BBQ rental: BBQ grill and 3 kg of charcoal included * ¥2,000 / day * Simple traditional rice-cooking釜 (kamado-style pot) set * ¥2,000 / day Please contact us in advance if you would like to rent either. Number of Guests The house is most comfortable for up to 3 guests. Children 5 years old or younger may stay free of charge when sharing a bed with an accompanying adult. If this applies to your stay, please include the child in the reservation as an infant. Skateable Landscape The concrete landscape can be used for skating entirely at your own risk. There are large rocks and other potentially dangerous features, so please skate only according to your own ability and experience. We strongly recommend wearing protective gear and a helmet. Please take extra care after rain or snowfall, as wet concrete slopes can become extremely slippery and dangerous. By using the skateable area, you accept full responsibility for your own safety.
