In Accompong on the mountaintop in Cockpit Country, O&G Guesthouse offers new and beautiful accommodations in the small, friendly Maroon community. Our house is topped off with a bar, tearoom, and large veranda to relax while taking in 360 scenic views. Explore trails, rivers, and medicinal plants that nourish the Maroon way of life, honoring its history and values. African drumming, dancing and Reggae music fill the hills with joy. Appleton Rum Estate and Ys River Falls are a short drive. The Green Room has private outside access with a patio overlooking the garden and mountains. It opens into the commons area with a full kitchen. The attractive tiled bathroom is just off the commons area and may be shared with one another guest. Guests have 24 hour access to the rooftop veranda that offers 360 panoramic views of the mountains, sunrise, sunset, and stars galore. Guests have access to the whole downstairs with bedroom, bath, kitchen, commons area, outside patio. They also can use the rooftop veranda 24 hours a day. The Guesthouse has a large yard with a working farm and a variety of plants, herbs and trees. Guests are welcome to stroll around the property and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains. We'll be able to offer help throughout the day, provide charter taxi service (for a fee) and link you up with local guides to show you the beautiful and historic sites around Accompong, such as the Peace Cave and the Kindah Tree. Pondside Bounties is a herbal tea industry of the neighborhood. You can learn from the neighbors about healing properties of native plants, passed down by their ancestors, and how they have used these to grow their own economy. Discover the real Jamaica, removed from, but close enough to, the beach scene. With a rich legacy, Accompong remains an independent, sovereign state formed in 1738 by runaway slaves when they defeated the British. Maroon values of respect, autonomy, and freedom remain alive. Walk the same paths as the founders, such as to the Kindah Tree where strategy was planned and to the Peace Cave where the Treaty was signed. Talking with the founders’ descendents is easy as you stroll through town where you are greeted by elders and youth. The town is small and transportation is not needed to get around. (Driver available for those needing assistance.) There are several walking trails to visit historic landmarks or unique ecosystem outcrops and guides are available. Route taxis are available to get to nearby towns. Charter taxis can be arranged easily. To learn more about the area and help it thrive, check out these links:
