Snow has arrived and "Downstairs at the B.G.V." is a great place to experience it. On the shores of beautiful Lake Memphremagog, this little City is surrounded by all the things you're looking for, scenic drives, walking, hiking, cross-country skiing, breweries, close to Jay Peak, restaurants and more! Come explore, stay & visit family, or friends, or cross the Border for a quick getaway! "Downstairs at the B.G.V." looks forward to welcoming you here! This private apartment Suite on the 1st floor (not the basement) and is self contained. Although it has No Kitchen, it does have a small microwave and small refrigerator. It is located below my other Suite, the "Big Green Victorian - Upstairs..." "Downstairs at the B.G.V." offers a large comfortable living room, complete with Cable, WiFi, and a '60's record player, with a broad of selection of vinyl/albums. The bedroom has a Queen-size bed and attached bath (with linens, towels...). A private screened in porch offers an additional social area (depending on the weather!). Some guests have commented that the bathroom is small. I like to think of it as being compact. It has all you need, porcelain tub/shower, toilet, sink, and a place to put things. This is an old house (1875), with the original bathroom, which was for function; not necessarily for comfort. And that, is part of its charm! As mentioned above, "Downstairs at the B.G.V." has no kitchen and isn't intended to act as one. Things needing a freezer for storage, while here, can be put in my freezer (just ask me). A Gift Certificate to a local breakfast restaurant OR a place for some food after activities... is provided to help make your stay more enjoyable. As for coffee, there are three options available: 1. A coffee maker with Green Mountain Coffee can be placed in the space; 2. If you have pods, a Keurig can be placed; 3. If you like coffee but rather not make it, I can provide you with a carafe of fresh brewed coffee each morning (I get up early and it's not a problem at all). A device for boiling water can also be made available for those who prefer Tea. During the heating months, the temperature in the suite is 68 degrees. With high ceilings, sitting and watching television or reading, etc. may be a bit cool, but there are plenty of lap blankets. But you might want to bring a sweater if you run cold. However, to date no one has commented on the temperature. In the warmer months, there is a portable air conditioner in the living room window (placed generally around the first of June) and a window fan for the bedroom is available. Entrance to the suite is through the main (shared) hallway in the front of the house, then down the hall. Access to the suite is private. Keys provided at check in. I look forward to welcoming you personally, but your arrival is based on your schedule, not mine. I like to contact my guest prior to their arrival to explain how to get to my driveway and into the house. When you arrive, the house and the suite will be unlocked, and ready. Instructions about the keys and the doors are provided once you arrive. As it is a big house, I live here as well. So, if you need something, I'm available and will do my best to help you. Newport itself, sits at the southern end of Lake Memphremagog, an Indian name meaning (and fitting), "beautiful waters." From the "BGV" you're a 5-minute walk to the bike path and lake. Swimming in Newport is limited to Prouty Beach which can be reached by car or bike path. There are several other places to swim in the area as well as hike and bike. Bluffside Farm is easily accessed and covers several areas of outdoor activities. At the top of the lake is in Magog, PQ (Canada), a charming, French Canadian city, 40 minutes away by car. Along the way, the trip takes you through some of the lovely Eastern Township communities providing a variety of seasonal offerings. A passport is required. "Downstairs at the BGV" provides off-street parking for guests. Our City is small and has limited public transportation. A car is essential, especially in the winter. There are many interesting things to see, and do, within a 30 mile drive. Within 10 minutes you can be at Wal-Mart (if you are in need) and with 15 minutes, into Canada. The house is centrally located making it ideal for those who just like to walk around and see historic buildings, churches, art galleries... We have a diverse selection of restaurants, which are amazingly good, with offerings ranging from Thai "Dusit Thai" to local craft beers and wines at "The Warehouse" or the "T-Bar." If pizza & subs, are what you're after try "Hoagies". Looking for a local Tavern? The Tavern is a short drive away with a great menu. If you are wanting Italian, then "Lago Trattoria" is where you'll want to dine. There's the Eastside Restaurant and Pub, with an amazing deck, and a short drive away, Vermont Pie and Pasta. For breakfast or lunch, you might consider "Elmer's Cabin" the "Brown Cow" "Newport Natural Cafe" or "Roaster's Cafe." Local breweries to visit are: Kingdom Brewery, about 15 minutes away and Farm Hillstead Brewery, about 40 minutes away. 30 minutes away is Jay Peak's Pump House Indoor Water Park. "Downstairs at the B.G.V." is just 15 minutes from Derby Line if you are traveling for a Global Entry Review or to visit friends or family at the Haskell Library. A note to all perspective Airbnb guests: The BGV does not use any type of surveillance technology, in any of the lodging areas. Your comfort and privacy is very important. Keeping you safe, secure, and respected is always a top priority.
