Cottage on Maine's Penobscot River

Luna Cottage, located on the West Branch of the Penobscot River on Verona Island, offers a serene get-a-way while being only a short distance from some of Maine's best-known coastal towns & vacation destinations. Take day trips or just stay & relax! The town of Bucksport is just across the river and is in a renaissance after the closing of its paper mill. New businesses are developing along Main St. Maybe you'll even decide to live here! I REQUIRE GUESTS TO BE FULLY VACCINATED FOR COVID. The space Luna Cottage is a traditional New England cottage built in the 1930's with a spacious wrap-around porch. With recent updates, it is a cozy and comfortable space with a lovely furnished living room/dining area and a second floor bedroom that look down towards the river. A well-equipped modern kitchen, small first floor bedroom and bathroom with a shower complete the cottage space. Follow the path through the wildflower field to the river's edge, and, depending on the tide, relax with a book or walk the rocky beach. The Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory can be viewed from the beach. While we do have neighbors nearby (across the road and to the side, behind us), there is much privacy, and it is very quiet. Please note that we live in the cottage a week or so a month, so you will find indications of our living there: personal items in drawers, closets and bathroom, and a few staples in the refrigerator and cupboards. We also have a small dog and a cat, who come along with us when we stay at the cottage. There is a combination washer-dryer that you are welcome to use for very small loads of laundry. Please only use the washer without the dryer since the dryer is unreliable. (And before using, please review directions for its use.) In the small bedroom closet you will find a folding bamboo drying rack. Guest access Please enjoy the entire cottage and property! To access the password for internet access, please go to the inside front cover of the Luna Cottage information notebook that you will find on the coffee table in the cottage. And, there are a variety of books, magazines, games and musical instruments (a guitar, tamborine, several drums and percussive rattles) for your entertainment! We also have 2 fire pits (one by the river and one near the cottage) and Adirondack chairs near the river for your enjoyment. Re: THE RIVER AND SHORELINE-- The Penobscot River is a salt-water tidal river, and swift and unpredictable currents prohibit safe swimming. Also (and sadly), mercury levels in the Penobscot River are high, so if you go onto the beach area, it is advisable to refrain from digging into and handling sand, rocks, etc. I'd suggest you stay up on the grassy area where the fire pit and Adirondack chairs are located. However, there are safe and lovely swimming areas nearby. Please go to the guidebook for information. Other things to note There is a local grocery store (Hannaford supermarket & pharmacy) about a mile away in Bucksport and a lovely mile-long riverside walk-way and marina. There is an independent bookstore (Bookstacks) on Main St. that also sells a variety of nice wines, an historic movie theater (the Alamo) that features recent released films every weekend, an ice cream shop (a local favorite), interesting restaurants (check out Verona Wine & Bistro and a new take-out Thai restaurant), an interesting antique/flea-market-kind-of shop. During the summer and fall seasons, on Thursday afternoons, you will find a farmers' market next to the town's post office.
