This is a beautiful 200 year old classic brick Federal house furnished with 19th Century country antiques. The house is full of original features, including doors, beautiful moldings and what is purported to have been a hiding place for slaves traveling on the Underground Railroad. We are located on 100 acres of agricultural land including gardens, a tree nursery, and some woods. There is a very private swimming pond and a clay tennis court in excellent condition. First floor: We have a good sized farm kitchen stocked with essentials. We stock staples such as coffee, tea, and spices. There is a large living room with a working fireplace, a formal dining room with a table that seats 10 comfortably, a library, and a bedroom (with king sized bed and full bathroom). In addition to “every day” dishes, we also have vintage dishes and glassware for a more formal dinner. There is also a washer and dryer on the first floor. Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms (one with a queen sized bed and two with two twin beds each) as well as two full bathrooms. There is also a “secret” attic annex with a fifth bedroom (double bed) appropriate for children or less fussy adults. In the basement, there’s a good children’s library, some toys and a small billiard table. Guests have access to the entire house. Feel free to walk the grounds. The house is located on 100 acres of agricultural land including gardens, a tree nursery, and some woods. Across the road and up a grass path, there is a very private swimming pond, a clay tennis court in excellent condition, and a small cabin. There is also a canoe and plenty of trees to climb. My husband and I live nearby and try to meet guests when they arrive to familiarize them with the house. Washington County is a wonderful rural community all year round. To the east are the Vermont Green Mountains and to the West are the Adirondack Mountains. You can’t go very far without seeing cows, horses, bee hives, apple orchards and miles of fields of corn and hay. There’s a Shurfine food market and a small organic grocery less than 5 minutes away in the village of Cambridge. On weekends, Cambridge hosts a fabulous farmer’s market with live music. Cambridge also has a very good book store and several good antique shops. There’s a great local brewery in Cambridge (with live music in the summer) and a few pretty basic restaurants for pizza, Chinese or Italian food. There are a couple of fancier restaurants about 15 minutes away and many fine restaurants within a 45 minute drive in Saratoga Springs or Manchester, Vermont. There is no place prettier than Washington County in spring. You can fly fish, kayak, and canoe on the famous Battenkill River. In the summer, there are bikes nearby to rent and ride on miles of quiet country roads (Cambridge also hosts the very popular “Tour of the Battenkill” cycling race). There is the Cambridge Valley hot air balloon festival in June, ballet/orchestra/rock concerts at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center all summer, and lots of shopping in Saratoga and Manchester. And of course, the Saratoga Thoroughbred Race Track is open late July through Labor Day. There are also some wonderful performances and classes (music, theatre, dance, yoga, etc.) in Cambridge Village at the historic Hubbard Hall. In the fall, in addition to world class leaf peeping, there is the Washington County Cheese Tour, the Fiber Tour (farm stops and workshops) and a major art show to benefit local land conservation. There’s miles of hiking all around. Come winter, Bromley is 45 minutes away and Stratton is about an hour. We have cross country skiing and snowshoeing “right out the back door”. There is plenty of parking in front of the house, with a convenient circular driveway. There is a charcoal barbeque on the back patio. We now have FIOS broadband internet service! Our digital antennae brings in local tv network channels. The house is not child proofed and there are a lot of stairs so it may not be appropriate for very young children. We will allow small, well trained pets on a case by case basis. No smoking in the house please.
