Description

If you love a vintage vibe, rustic spaces, unique experiences, architecture & history, then this cozy & eclectic, completely private, 1,250 sq ft tree-top retreat in the original 3rd-floor servants' quarters of the Historic Welch Mansion is for you! Prime location in beautiful, Historic Cathedral Hill: walk to fabulous restaurants, bars, cafes & shops; reach downtown St. Paul, Ordway & Xcel Energy Center in minutes; or hop the nearby train to the U of M, US Bank Stadium & downtown Minneapolis. The space Step inside the home from your own private entrance off the side carriage porch to the warmth of original oak paneling throughout the spacious and private side hall, complete with convenient access to a beautiful first-floor half bath featuring antique marble sink and high-tank toilet. Make your way up the winding oak servants' staircase to the private 1,250 square foot 3rd-floor suite, once home to the Welch family's servants. Enjoy full access to everything up there, including 2 large bedrooms, each with its own cozy window seat—we've named one the "Sarah Fairbault Room" after the Welch family's head housekeeper for more than 20 years (think Mrs. Hughes from Downton Abbey), and the other the "Esther Seablom & Nettie Staake Room" after the family's two maids. Kick back, relax, and unwind in the spacious living room where you can stream your favorite show or movie on the 55” smart TV from the oversized feather-down sectional; give in to your competitive side by cracking open one of the many available vintage board games; or grab a blanket and book or vintage magazine and head to the charming reading nook for some cozy quiet time. Enjoy the convenience of the super cute 1950s retro kitchen, complete with gas stove, full refrigerator, double sink, microwave, coffee maker, cookware, utensils, and vintage dishware. And don’t miss the adorable original features of the full bath, still with its 1894 clawfoot tub, copper tank toilet, and wainscoting. When you’re done exploring the 3rd floor, feel free to enjoy the mansion’s grounds, gardens, and relax on the beautiful porch and patio, too! Please remember that this is a historic home from 1894, and its unique qualities come with 130-year-old quirks and imperfections, so if you are expecting brand new or the latest trends, you may be disappointed. But if a totally unique experience is what you’re after, then this charming vintage hideaway is sure to make your stay in St. Paul special. We look forward to sharing our labor of love with you! Guest access Full private access to: •Side-door entrance and carriage porch •1st-floor side hall, 1/2 bath off of side hall, and stairway leading to the 3rd floor •All finished areas of the 3rd floor Shared access to: •Grounds and gardens •Patio and porch, upon arrangement Other things to note ABOUT CHECK-IN TIMES: Please arrange your arrival time in advance with the host who will meet you at the door to check you in, tour you through the apartment, and answer any questions you may have prior to getting settled in. Check-in time is typically after 5:00 pm, but may be flexible with prior arrangement. ABOUT CHECK-OUT TIMES: Check-out time is typically 12:00 pm, but may be flexible with prior arrangement. ABOUT THE STAIRS: Please note that in order to access the space you must first climb 5 exterior porch steps to reach the entry door; once inside, you will need to climb 2 full flights of winding, carpeted stairs (32 steps total) to access the 3rd-floor suite. ABOUT THE SHOWER: Please note that while the bathroom is utterly charming, with its sloped roofline evoking images of a top-floor Parisian apartment, it was originally designed for servants (who were likely a bit shorter than we are today!) and the tub was originally intended for bathing only. With the addition of the shower, the maximum head clearance from tub floor to ceiling is only about 5’10”; however, we are 5’10” and 5’9” and can comfortably shower in the tub. ABOUT OUR RESTORATION: We purchased this historic home in 2013 and are still in the midst of a major restoration to bring her back to her original glory. We love historic architecture, history, and our Historic Cathedral Hill Neighborhood (see details under “The Neighborhood”). Most evenings and weekends we can be found dangling from ladders, wielding paint brushes, or tending to the yard and gardens. Rest assured, your private space will remain project-free during your stay, and if we are working on other things around the house we will make every effort to respect your peace and quiet. ABOUT THE ARCHITECT: Easily Minnesota’s most prolific architect, Clarence H. Johnston not only designed 44 mansions along nearby Summit Avenue (“the best preserved Victorian boulevard in American”), but hundreds of residential, commercial, government, and institutional buildings throughout Minnesota, including the world-famous Glensheen-Historic Congdon Estate in Duluth, and the majority of early buildings on all of the University of MN campuses across the state, including Northrup Auditorium, Walter Library, and Folwell Hall on the Minneapolis campus.
