Description

Quaint cottage in Cornucopia, WI on Lake Superior. Two BRs, one bath. Full kitchen. Deer in the yard, once a bear. Fire pit, artesian well. Walk to beach, restaurants, shops. Russian Orthodox Church, marina, kayaking, Siskiwit Falls, and so much more! Summer is perfect! Apple season in the fall is incomparable! Enjoy a day driving and looking at the leaves, stopping at orchards and wineries. The space While there are no stairs inside the house, there is a deck with three steps, and no railing (the wall of the house on one side). The back entrance has a small set of steps to enter the house. See the picture of the house, where you can check the front deck. Guest access Guests have access to the entire house and yard area. In the spring, birds build their nests in birdhouses in the front and back yards. Please observe the birds and any other wildlife you see only from a distance. In the morning, sitting on the couch or deck, you can watch deer play in the field south of the house. In the backyard, there is the output flow from the artesian well. I'm planting a lot of flowers and herbs there. Take a stroll, and enjoy the little 'stream'. Note that the 'bridge' is not a bridge, but two old logs covered with plant material. Please do not walk on the logs for your own safety. And, in general, tread gently! Thank you! Other things to note You won't want to leave! The village of Cornucopia is peaceful and pretty. Walk around and see the houses and the gardens and the trees. Don't miss the Russian Orthodox Church in the village, or the marina, or the shops and museum on the Lake. Halvorson's Fisheries is at the Corny Beach, so stop at the store and get some fresh or smoked trout or whitefish, and some trout or whitefish dip. Get some wine and a box of crackers, and sit on Corny beach and have your fish snacks. Take a Sea Caves tour offered by the Good Earth shop. Or arrange a kayak tour from Lost Creek Adventures. Enjoy a morning coffee and scone or pastry of the day, or some ice cream in the afternoon at the Corny Coffee and Sweets on Superior Ave. If it's Thursday afternoon, during the summer and fall, you can go to the Farmers' Market at Corny Beach. Fresh produce in season, and soaps, honey, meats, and other farmers' market goodies. Bring an empty jug for some fresh water from the artesian well! Siskiwit Falls is on the edge of town. You can walk, but it's off of County C (heading toward Washburn) so you might want to drive instead - it's not a busy highway, though, so if you want to walk, it should be just fine. As you drive toward Washburn (it's about 3/4 mile from Star North gas station, give or take). Turn left onto Siskiwit Falls Rd. About 50 yards down the road you will come to a bridge. The little Falls is on the right side of the bridge. If you find the trail on the other side of the bridge, you can walk along the river, and see the trees, and the water slipping over the stratified rock outcroppings that form the river, moss growing on the rock in the shallows, and relax in the tranquility of the place. Do a tick check when you get home, or actually whenever you have been in the grass anywhere! Ehlers General Store is usually open until 6 PM., while the gas station on the corner of Highway County C and Superior Ave, Star North, is open later into the evening. Star North has a laundromat, and they carry cheeses and pizzas and other food items, as well as beer, wine and liquor, and some souvenir items. Three miles from Cornucopia, heading toward Bayfield, is Meyers Beach ($5.00 entrance fee - bring cash for the self-service envelope) from which you can see the Sea Caves/Ice Caves at a distance. This long, long sandy beach is part of the Apostle Island National Lakeshore. Watch kayakers getting their lessons before setting off in the direction of the caves. Afternoons are intensely sunny and without shade (on sunny days, of course) so if you plan to stay on the beach all day, you may want a shade umbrella or tent (and cooler). Oh, and very hot sand when it's hot outside! You can walk and walk and walk, and find sea glass and pretty stones along the beach, and smooth driftwood. On the rim above the beach, you can do a hike-in, hike-out (maybe a couple of hours both ways - I haven't done it in awhile) through the woods to overlook the sea caves. Make a campfire in the evening in the fire pit near the garage at the Larson Cottage. You can purchase firewood from Star North or Ehlers. Please don't bring firewood from a distance as it may be carrying non-local diseases or invasive species. On a rainy day, there is still a lot to do. In the house, there are games and puzzles for kids and adults, cards, and paints and paper. You will find games low on the wooden furniture piece between the living room and the kitchen (on the wall against the bedroom), as well as in a small 'checkers stool' next to the TV. There are DVDs, and loads of books. Books for all ages. All kinds of books! One book case in the living room, and another in the 2nd bedroom. In the village, you can sit in the Coffee Shop and Ice Cream Shop and play games, watch people coming and going, eavesdrop, or look at local artists' pieces in the shop. Guest wifi. Check out the old school, now the Community Center on County Highway C, if it is open. There is a small library and sometimes a little exhibit in one of the rooms. Go look at the Lake in the rain (if it's not too stormy). Or walk through the town in the mist in the morning.
