The High Country Hobo Preserve: Rustic Cabin

Welcome to the High Country Hobo Preserve. This hidden gem is nestled in the Cleveland National Forrest. Guest cabin has all amenities: wood burning fireplace, board games, fishing poles, bottle house, bbq, and gold pans for when the creek is flowing. An outdoor fire pit if winds are calm. It has old character, unique charm, and is close to old mining town, Julian. Kitchen has fridge, hot plate, grill, microwave, coffee maker- coffee tea provided. Pets welcome, has dog door, fenced yard. The space The High Country Hobo Preserve is located in the small city of Descanso, meaning Rest From Labor. We are about 45 minutes from Downtown San Diego yet a world away. The guest cabin sits on our 1 acre property which has a main cabin, guest cabin, horse corral, and billiard room. The cabin built in 1890 was originally a small one bedroom stone cabin constructed by a woman with stones from Mt. Laguna. Over the years the main cabin, now my bedroom, has been added on to however the structure still maintains its original character. I have constructed a bottle house on the property and when the fire is lit inside it is an amazing site to enjoy. The Guest Cabin stands alone across from our home so you don't need to see us or even interact with us unless you're looking for local tips. The cabin is surrounded by National Forrest to the north and the west to give you privacy. There is plenty of parking on the property. We ask that you limit shower time due to well water restrictions. Our cabin does not have central heat and air as we prefer to keep it outdated for a more authentic feel however during the summer a window A/C can keep you cool and in the winter the wood burning stove heats the whole cabin comfortably. The area has mountain lion, coyote, bobcat, bald eagles, wild turkey, deer, and when warm rattle snakes so please use caution when exploring. You can access trails from our backyard and wonder among the variety of trees, rocks, and it is an excellent location to search for native gems and for star gazing at night. Guest access As our home sits on this property we are not far from you if you need anything however a key will be left for you to gain entrance. You have full use of the land around the cabin. Perkins is a small market about 10 minutes from our home and has supermarket basics in addition there is a fruit stand on the corner of Highway 79 offering local organic treats. There is a full fridge to keep items cool. There is a TV with built in DVD player, bring your movies! There are no active TV stations or cable as we want you to disconnect and enjoy the area, there is wifi. We are 18 miles from the old mining town of Julian and 13 miles to excellent fishing at Lake Cuyamaca. Other things to note Descanso is a very small mountain community full of nice people who prefer the slower quieter life. Loud music will carry and we ask you to please be respectful of our neighbors. WIFI in our mountain community doesn’t have the speed of the city. The cabin is heated naturally by the wood burning stove, once lit it heats the entire cabin very well. There is an additional plug in heater. Please note if you book in the late fall early spring or winter our mountain is cold!! This means you need to be ready to light a fire and maintain it. We have had renters complain about the weather being too cold and actually score us low in their review when we cannot control the weather. Fire starter and wood are available for your use but it is up to you to keep the fire burning, it’s the mountains! :) There is also a auto inflating full size blow up mattress or you can sleep on the sectional couch in front room. We want you to be comfy!
